Does anyone know of any online grammar checking tools?

Are they effective?

If you are an article writer, do you use these tools, or do you just read through your article to check for errors?

Thanks for your help.

  • MS Office 2007 has a grammar checking tool which you can 'train' by adding unusual words/names to its memory.

  • Thanks for the info guys! I may get MS Office 2007 based on your comments, I will check it out. At the moment, I'm using an older version of MS Office which doesn't include this tool, do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks for your help.

    • MS Office/Word has included a Grammer Checker since at least 1995.
Unless you are using a DOS version, the grammer checker is there.

Originally grammer checking was seperate from the spell checking though, now they are combined.

  • This is the best tool you'll find online:
spellcheckplus dot com (sorry, can't post links yet)

If you type your articles in Word and then run it through this online checker, you are golden - you will get some false positives, but it is very good for catching common mistakes that no other tool (online or offline) catches.

Give it a try and you'll see what I mean - I am subscribed to the pro version, but I do a lot of writing and for most guys the free one works just fine...

I also use WordWeb (which is 100% free) since it gives me way more synonyms than Word

    Hope this helps
  • There is no useful tool other than MS Office 2007. Dear you can use it, it is best option for you. You can fix your grammar error and spellings errors very quickly with low effort.
I am using office 2007 and found it very effective and now I can not live without it.You must try it.
  • If you have the money for it, then whitesmoke is the best grammar checker software period. If not, then ms word 2007 is you best alternative, all the freeware ones aren't worth anything.

I found this is a quite reasonable one if anybody is interested, it's more for academic essays but still useful. link below:

  • Word 2007 and 2010 also have a little used "Readability Statistics" that can be turned on for further refinements and writing improvement.

    • Great tip BTW, turned it on yesterday and wrote quite a few reviews and aritcles - with Readability Statistics on, you don't need any other tool than Word.
  • Hey friend there are many gramman checking tools. Some of them are as follows
    abiword
    language tool
    grammar slammer
    spellchecker etc.
  • I have WhiteSmoke but I think it is hyped up. It very seldom reports any grammar errors although English is my second language. I use NeuroGrammar. It has an old fashion interface and is a bit expensive, but it is very advanced.

    • Thanks

NeuroGrammar is a pretty powerful piece of software, the best I have seen, at $150 it is costly, but it looks good. By the way, if anyone is interested they have a really cool Typing Tutor software, for free download on the site.
