Really Annoying Problem With HTML - Please Help!

Hi everyone,

I've got a webpage that occassionaly, for no reason at all, will turn every apostrophe into this symbol -->

The only way to get rid of them is to manually delete each apostrophe in the Notepad html file, retype it, save the file, and reupload. Obviously this is crazy!

Why does this symbol keep appearing, and is there a faster way to get rid of them? I've already tried using the "find and replace" tool in MS Word, but it doesn't get rid of them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's because MS Word uses characters that sometimes don't translate into HTML correctly. If you must use Word, first copy and paste it all into Notepad, then copy and paste again from Notepad and then into your HTML editor.

Even better, don't use Notepad. It can be just as bad sometimes.

Use a "real" text editor like EditPlus or UltraEdit.

Try using Wordpad instead of Notepad for basic text editing. You can still save the file as .txt or .html or whatever. I've also found that Notepad does weird things when you attempt to copy text and paste it somewhere else, so I try to avoid it altogether.

Yes, that is right - MS word doesn't use the right characters for web when typing apostrophes, quotes, and sometimes punctuation such as question marks and exclamation points. You should always write and edit your code in either your FTP file editor, or in wordpad or text edit (mac). They use simple characters that are web safe - I have always despised MS office software for this very reason.

    I definitely agree with that.

Using Word for HTML pages is about as useful as using Dreamweaver for printed documents.

Using the right tool for the job makes a huge difference.

You also get this problem with , and - and sometimes _ .

    Good thing to watch for.

If you are using a text editor, you can do a find and replace to catch them all at one time. Helps speed things up a bit.

    Thanks,

    John
