Why Do Some People Still Think This Works?

I wanted to share a phone conversation I had the other day with a couple that are one of the top income earners in a very well known health and wellness network marketing company. I won't mention which one, but it is one that I'm sure many of you have heard of and it is a company that I respect for having a good product.
I happened to be talking to this couple about some non MLM related business and we got into a discussion about what they were doing and how much money they were making etc. They told me how they were about to leave for an all expenses paid trip with their company as a result of their production. I congratulated them and told them how I though network marketing was the best industry to be in and hoped I too could one day reach the level they attained.
At that point they began to try and recruit me into their business. I told them I was already in a company that I was happy with felt was the best vehicle for me to achieve my success. They than tried to convince me that their company was better! It didn't matter how nice I was or what I said, they were certain I had a better chance of success in their company. They also tried to convince me I should sign up for a $99 auto ship of their product because it would make me feel better and I would be healthier as a result of it. When I asked them where I could find more information on the product, they told me there really wasn't anything available on the internet due to some sort of regulation. What a load of garbage! They expected me to freely pay them $99 every month to take their magic pills to make myself feel better without knowing what was in them. Maybe this is just me, but that seems a little crazy.
They continued to pressure sell me for about 10 minutes until I told them as politely as I could that I really was not interested. I think I had to tell them no about 8 or 9 times before they finally stopped pestering me.
After I got off the phone with them, it made wonder, if they were one of the top 3 income earners in the company, how many of their friends and family had they annoyed along the way to get there. There is no way I would ever join their team. I don't want to have to hard sell anyone on my company or my product. Talk about stressful. I could feel my blood pressure rising as I was talking to them.
This experienced reinforced in me the techniques that I use to build my own business. I never hard sell anyone on my product or my opportunity, they either get it or they don't. If they don't want it, I simply move on. I find this is a much more effective way in building a successful organization with much less stress. After all, this is supposed to be an enjoyable business. If you're not having fun, maybe you are doing it wrong.

Why do some people still think this works? -Because it does work. If the revenue brought in from tele-sales is higher than the cost to pay the telemarketers, it's profitable.

That's good that the experience helped reinforce the way you want to do business... Dealing with happy customers is much more enjoyable than dealing with angry customers for me as well. :-)

However, some business models are based on making their customers angry. One that comes to mind is Video Professor, which I did a video expose report on earlier this month. (Customer just pays shipping on first "free" video CD, which is bundled with 2 other CD's the customer didn't ask for. Hidden in the fine print:

"After your 10-day free trial, if you decide to keep the complete Lesson Suite, we'll conveniently bill your credit card just $189.95"

Are their customers pissed? Google "Video Professor scam" for your answer. (And for the record, I'm not stating that Video Professor is running a scam, I'm saying that the end result is that many of their customers feel like they've been scammed. You couldn't pay me enough money to have to answer their customer support phone. :-)

Back in the early 80's, when I thought it mattered who I ran with and was seen in the company of (that ain't me anymore), I was invited to a cocktail party. The hosts were a high profile couple in our community. He had the BIG insurance agency and she was the interior decorator to the high brow.

When I arrived, I thought, "this is nice. Great spread" then it happened. The hostess announced that her husband would be home in a few minutes and they had an announcement. There were about 10 couples of us there and when HE walked in, the sales pitch started.............AMWAY! OMG! You should have seen the looks on the peoples faces.

The killer was that the host, who was the last one to the party, blocked the drive so no one could leave. Being me, I headed to the door and noticed this. I came back in and announced that a wrecker would soon be needed if the blue Lincoln was not moved from the drive, as I was getting ready to move it myself. And I announced in advance, that I would be filing an accident claim on Monday:-o

I too am stunned that the MLM high pressure stuff still happens. It insults my intelligence. But, there is still a part of me that marvels at the people who fall victim to it.

MLM people tried to recruit you into their business? I am shocked to hear that. Usually you have to beg them to tell you about it.

Blank lines between paragraphs make posts much more readable.

    High-pressure sales actually works.

What some networkers lack in direct marketing ability
they make up for with aggressive, pushy salesmanship.

You would rise faster in your own business if you were
more aggressive too... but mostly MLMs are a little funny
and the products aren't a very good value compared with
what you can get at a vitamin store. That hurts. But it's
true. Makes selling MLM stuff a little awkward - especially
with a lot of the silly health claims distributors make.

I agree with Tim on this one...

They use it because it does work. Unfortunately in most cases, the only ones getting rich are the people who got in early enough to build their downline before the marketing for the product becomes saturated and potential buyers build up a resistance.

I understand MLM tactics and, while I find them annoying, realize that it has more to do with the way they were trained ("Never take NO for an answer") than it does anything else.

More disturbing, in my opinion, is that some of these tactics have made their way into the Internet Marketing niche and if you supply your telephone number after purchasing a product, you open yourself up to attack by pushy and obnoxious tele-trolls who then try to bully you into buying a $5,000 coaching program that consists mainly of an outsourced web site and a few PDFs - Great value...

And, before it's even written - Yeah, I know the above statement will probably be picked out by the "Anything Goes To Make A Buck" crowd and I'll be accused of heresy for being "Anti-Marketing" but, I still maintain that just because I bought your product or signed up for your list does not mean that I am giving my permission to be subjected to hidden continuity programs, harassed by your telemarketing trolls, or for that matter, being kicked in the nuts whenever you see me on the street.

    Consumers are people too.
