I'm looking for help with an audio set up I've got...

I'm trying to record a podcast on Skype using Powergramo. The problem is I can hear the other person but not myself. It only works using a particular PC microphone (a basic desktop mic) but I am trying to use a different mic and no luck. Here's the mic I am trying to use:

It's a condenser mic plugged into a tube preamp (to boost the signal). Then this goes into the mic input on the soundcard using a XLR to mini jack plug.

Any ideas what the problem is?

I don't know anything about Powergrammo, but does it
have a setting to set what the sound source(s) are?

I use Pamela with very good results, or you could use
Camtasia, then export the audio.

I guess it's a mic set up issue, which is annoying as it's over £100 worth of audio equipment and I'd hate to have to spend more money on podcasting equipment or fancy Skype headsets...grr.

Double check your recording levels in the "Volume Control". Switch to the "recording" section and make sure that your recording level is set correctly and your microphone input is not muted or something like that. It is very easy to overlook that part of recording.

Can you record audio using Windows Sound Recorder?
If you can, then you know your hardware is fine.

yeah, I tried recording with this mic on ProTools (advanced studio recording software) and no probs there.

That's why it's so confusing, it's working but for some reason Powergramo doesn't want to know...the weirdest part is that when I call someone on Skype using this probelm microphone, I can hear myself back AND the other person can hear me...

...so it's literally just something to do with Powergramo not recording my voice with this mic.

How bizzare and utterly annoying!

I don't know anything about your software but I've been a Ham Radio buff for years.

If you're "amping" your microphone you're probably driving the input to the sound card to hard. A "mike in" jack expects a low level audio input with a fairly high impedance.

Either try the mike without the preamp or if your sound card has a "line in" input it might could handle the amplified signal.

Just my thoughts.

hmm thanks Steve, I tried your suggestions and still no joy. I give up, I'll have to buy a specific Skype headset methinks. (shame)
