About.com pages - Playing with a Monster?

Hello Warriors...

We all know this..About.com pages are among Google's spoiled sweeties..

Serious valuable keywords are usually dominated by these pages...

My question,..if you find one of these pages at the top of your target keyword, do you just give up early or do you follow a certain plan?

Does anyone get lucky knocking these pages down in the ranking?

My question isn't about authority sites, I know about.com is a major authority site, my question is specifically about this particular site, because I found that the plan that beat other authority sites doesn't get much luck with it...

Any ideas?

I think you're going to need an exact match domain, a big link wheel, and about 6 months of aggressive link building. If you have an old domain then it should be that little bit faster!

It depends on what sort of return you're likely to see if you do knock it off top spot.

If it helps, I see Wikipedia pages knocked off #1 all the time.

For sure. Just because they are 'well-known' and look and seem like they are an elite authority...doesn't mean they can't be dethroned...

I wouldn't really worry about it...

It's just one website.

You can start worrying when About, Wikipedia, Hubpages, and CNBC are all on the first page of a search term.

Yes, even if you can't compete with About, it's important to take into consideration all the other results on the page. About may have the first spot, but, it may not be overly difficult to get to the 2nd or 3rd (it just depends)...
