Client Services - advice

If I wanted to act as essentially an advertising agent how would I go about it? I mean in technical terms.

The client might be an online service or they might be bricks-n-mortar (probably the latter). If I were to manage say a PPC account for them, and if I were paid a percentage of the sales that resulted from my efforts in advertising, how would they know which people I referred who bought from them?

I do not think an exclusive one-man affiliate program would be a good idea because 1. they would need to do more work and probably pay out and 2. I do not want to be using affiliate links.

I know they could put a Google conversion tracker script on their thank-you page which would tell me a sale came from my add - but I do not think they can see that, and neither would I know the value.

Thoughts?

I would think that you would not work solely on a percentage of the sales. You would charge an upfront or monthly fee for managing their advertising campaign. You might also charge a percentage of sales if expectations were met.

For example you receive x% of sales if their sales increase by 50%

I think there is demand for this as many people don't know how to set up good online advertising programs.

Online is easy. Just run the ads and use a system like HyperTracker or Internet One System to handle the sales tracking.

Bricks and mortar is harder. Perhaps set up a site where people can print off a coupon for a certain amount off? Then the store owner can just count up how many coupons they get in a month and know they were as a result of your program.

Definitely charge an upfront fee and a monthly basis fee, you have no control on their conversion process or their sales close if you get their phone to ring...

unless you take over their whole landing page etc. so you can track all that.

      Thanks for the advice all.

I am thinking that any software would need to be able to inform both myself *and* the client of a sale generated from my efforts, otherwise it would not be workable. Can hypertracker do that? I've not used it before, though I've heard of it.

The pay structure can be worked out later, but for now I want to know the basic tracking can work effectively.

Are you a freelance writer? Fed up with being paid a few dollars for an article? Then it's time to click the link. You will *not* be disappointed!

In Hypertracker, you can create a separate login for your campaign so that both you and your client can login and see the results in real time. (they can just view results and not see your other customer's campaigns, just their own.)

          Thx Danny and Ebusiness,

I think a mirror site would be too much work for the client (or something they might not want) though I'll admit I do not know exactly how mirror sites work or are set up

So far my thoughts have been that I can allow access to Adwords so that the client is aware of the conversion number. However, as he sells multiple items, I need a way to know the actual value spent by the referred customer. How could this be achieved? Can Hypertracker do that?

Have you thought about setting up a mirror site - ie an exact copy of their site for your promotions then you can easily track all online requests - phone enquiries would need a seperate phone no. which may add extra expense - just a thought

    Hey Dubhdara,

You can put a tracking id on each adwords ad, linked to the thank you page like you said and it will show where the sale came from

example: the tracking code you put on your adwords ad is " t?=dubhdara "
whenever someone buys it will show up on their google analytics that the sale came from the PPC campaign that you manage!

I use this method all the time on most of my PPC Campaigns!

    Hopefully that helps!

Thx - but doesn't that only tell me the keyword that made the sale, not the value of what the person bought? A keyword might well be keyed to a specific product but that does not stop the person from buying something else entirely - or indeed multiple items....
