Alexa Rank is Annoying Me....

Hi guys and gals,

Just a quick one to share a little niggle with you.

I've got this site that gets an average of 25 unique visitors per day, according to Google Analytics.

However, its got an Alexa rank of 3 million? That just doesn't make sense in my opinion.

Thoughts?

The Alexa rank isn't very accurate. I know of a site which gets around 30,000 uniques per month but its Alexa rank is around 250,000, and I know of sites with far fewer uniques but yet have a better (<250,000) Alexa rank. I also know of two other sites which have a similar Alexa rank, but yet one has around 5x as much traffic as the other. Hence I tend to ignore Alexa rankings nowadays.

Anywhoo, have you got the Alexa toolbar installed in your browser?

I've come to the conclusion a long time ago to check out several ranking sites and take rough averages. No one page ranking site is dead on accurate in my opnion.

Same goes for backlink checkers. I can get 5 different readings of how many backlinks I have on the same site.

Alexa page rank is based on folks willing to download the alexa toolbar so it can track website visits by the folks who downloaded and installed the toolbar.

The theory is that if enough people download the toolbar, the statistics will work.

But if the group of installed toolbars is skewed enough by certain limited interests that are common to folks who are likely to download toolbars, it can certainly skew the results that are shown.

One of my sites gets several hundred uniques a day and is rated at 1.7 million but I know from the type of site it is that most of the visitors are not the type who would download a toolbar.

Another site I just created a few weeks ago gets 25-50 uniques a day and is rated at around 6.8 million on alexa.

At low visit counts, alexa ratings are highly skewed by the number of people who visit the site who have the toolbar installed.

At really high visit counts, it gets more reliable because statistically you get a more even level of folks visiting who have the toolbar installed. (Well... at least most of the time.)

The Alexa ranking is inaccurate. Alexa ranking should be ignored, it's just that i don't understand why people still pay attention to it.

    You might try this...

if you use Firefox, go install the Alexa Sparky add-on and when you click thru to their "contact info" link via the add-on, you will get all the metrics you need to do the basic recon on the site's owner, traffic, search terms etc.

Since Sparky is connected to JigSaw, you can also get the c-level, sales, admin contacts, phone and email addresses for key people, which can be pretty handy too. JigSaw is Free to use, but they have an Premium version for those who do a lot of online prospecting.

Option 1: Install the Alexa toolbar and visit your site regularly, at least once a day. Watch as your Alexa rating goes up. Back when they offered custom toolbars, you could offer that to your visitors and watch your rating go up even more.

Option 2: Ignore your Alexa rating.

It makes sense to me. 3 Million is not that bad. It's low and the statistics are probably not accurate but there are a lot of sites lower than that. Just focus on building traffic sources and forget about the alexa rank for now. However, don't completely forget about it for the future. The alexa is one of the major elements that advertisers use to determine how much a site is worth. If you can manage to get your alexa rank higher (which should happen naturally overtime), you will be able to sell advertising and make more money off of the site.
