Just tested a couple of my sites on there and the traffic estimates are way off.

      WAY off.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

        No kidding. Ridiculously off.

And not even consistently off. Two of the sites I checked out had comparable traffic levels. And the estimated traffic wasn't comparable at all.

            Exactly, Dan.

I go back to my original statement: NO, the average person cannot tell how much actual traffic their competitor is getting without access to their server logs.

I agree completely. I just like to check these sites out every time one gets suggested, just to see if they are getting any better at estimating traffic.

From what I've seen, they're not.

does the site allow users to add/upload content to the site in anyway?

If so there are ways to track how many times a element you hide on the page loads. That will give you a rough estimate of how often certain pages are getting loaded, etc. Without boring you with the technical details, I think you can get the drift of where this method can lead...

The answer is no, you can't. Without access to their server logs, you can never know for certain how much traffic any site gets.

  • Yes.

    1. Ask them.
    2. Get a couple of their logs, find out what stat software they are using (some stat software as part of their TOS actually allows you to see 100% exactly what your competition is getting). Make educated guesses, etc. etc.
