Been with WP for short time and I am getting bombarded with Spam Comments.....HELP !!

Yeah this has really taking the wind out of my sail. Everyday I go in my Blogs on Wordpress and I haver tons of spam comments. My weight loss blog is the one I am mostly concerned about because it is turning into my Authority Blog.

One reason I switched from Blogger to WP because I wanted to get serious with this Weight loss blog. Amd everyone told me to go to WP if I wanted to get serious.
But I have to wade thru 30 or 40 spam comments a day and delete them. And some I am not evern sure if they are legitimate comments or not. I get so tired I just delete them all.

Is there any hope in getting off this Spam list ?? At blogger blog I have NEVER had such a problem. But for some reason right after I created these Blogs on WP I have become inundated with this Spam.

Thanks for any help or advice,
Robert

As with everything WP, it's easy! Just go get a plugin.

Did you activate the Akismet plugin that comes with your downloaded WP package? It catches most of the spam automatically and you don't even see them.

      Akismet works great.

I sometimes wonder how effective spam'ing blogs can be....

Yeah spam is generally a problem with WP. The only way I manage to control it is to set up the Akismet plugin, it usually catches the spam in action. Apart from that I am not sure, maybe someone else has a better alternative.

Yes spam is a problem with word press. Did you activated the Akismet plugin. There are lot of spams comes in word press. suggest you to use captcha for comments so a human can enter and can give comments on your posts. This will help you to decrease the spam comments.

    Aksimet is great.

If you want to go the extra mile there is another Comment Plugin that puts a 'captcha' into the comment form that needs to be entered before teh comment is accepted for moderation.

That takes care of all the auto-comment spam.

Forget what it's called though - you'll find it by Googling.

Can't you turn the comments off completely? This is the first thing I do on Wordpress blogs: I turn off the comments, I change the permalinks, and I install a few plugins - not sure if this is possible if you are not hosting the blogs though.

It never asked me any $$$$

Go to wordpress.COM and start the registering process and when it asks whether you want a blog or just Akismet API... select no blog.
    It should be free.

Or, think of a good keyword, register a blog [my-kool-keyword.wordpress.com] and it gives you the API key automatically inside your admin panel.

Is it smart to delete comment spam?

A comment is a comment. A comment becomes spam to your site if it drains away power (using the word as a metaphor). But if it doesn't drain anything away and gets counted as a comment it's not negative.

What I have done is install the plugin link-log-matcher (I have no relationship with the owner/creator, this is not an affiliate link as I am NOT an affiliate, and this is not a link, just the name underlined). It's also called Power Indexer.

Here is part of the sales page:

Power Indexer is a plugin that gets inbound links indexed by search engines within hours rather than weeks. ....

        Benefits:

» Increase your rankings by getting pages that contain inbound links indexed faster.
» Enable the plugin and it starts working immediately.
» Uses your visitor's IP address, not your server!

What I do is edit inbound comment spam by removing the links. I leave words but no links. The comment spammer's IP address remains.

If I am right (I'm not an expert) the comment spammer gets no benefit from the spam, while I get a comment. Someone who knows more should tell me whether I'm fooling myself or I'm onto a neat trick.

Most spam comments are garbage. Why would you even want them? If they don't add value to the conversation, what good are they? If they are not relevant to the content of the page, you're just adding more irrelevancy to your page, which may in turn attract more of the same type of spammers. They could water down the value by adding worthless junk.

If I go to a site and see a bunch of junky comments, I may be less inclined to comment on that site (with a real comment!) and may even be less inclined to trust the site.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.
