How Would You Build A List With Email Marketing?

I know I can buy a lot of leads to email but I can get thousands of leads free with listgrabber using google and at least they're targeted. Which companies train you in email marketing and sell you leads? Are there any fabulous ones that have helped you to get good paying customers that spent money after you built trust with them? Is there such a thing as a good quality bought email list or does it not make much difference? Do you think those deals 10 thousand leads for $50 are worth it?

    I was reading a report from a Scottish internet chap who has been very successful with his list building by initially giving worthwhile stuff away and developing quite a close community as his list.

    He over delivered, treated them like real people not just as a list and so developed a loyal, targetted, responsive "list".

    Now he took part in an affiliate launch to promote a product of a person who had been a big help to him when he started.

    When the launch was completed he came third for the number of people he had attracted to the product.

    The point of this long winded story is that at the time he had a list of 11,000 people. What pleasantly surprised him was that he had beaten so called Gurus who had lists of 60-80,000 people.

    You can buy lists, but all the feedback I have got from people has been pretty ho-hum about their success. Probably because they haven't built a relationship.

    By all means try them to see for yourself, but I think in the long term if you treat people as people and over deliver, your business will be on a much more secure footing.
