How Much Money Is Enough $$$

I have to admit I do want to get to a point of making a million per year IM but if I do actually get to that point, I think I would strive for more.

So could we really put a limit on what is enough?

Why do you want to make a million a year? I think once you answer that question, you'll know.

Making a million/year may ruin your life if you don't have a good plan. Have you thought about that?

      Interesting response he had.

It's also rumored that a reporter asked Rockefeller's accountant how much he left behind? Want to know what the answer was?

Extraordinarily successful people often reach the point where the money only matters as a means of keeping score. In those situations they'll never have "enough". The real trick is balancing the rest of your life with work. No matter how much you enjoy what you're doing, the rest of the world is out there waiting to be discovered.

Oh man, you're way off. There are quite a few WF members who are pulling $1M a year online.

But for my answer to the question, I am definitely one of those people that wants an excessive amount of money.

I have always had huge goals. The big money, the expensive cars, and the huge houses. It's something I've dreamed about since I was a kid.

I've become much more laid back in my life and understand that happiness isn't about money. It's more so a game to me now. I strongly believe in having goals in life. You always want something to reach for.

I have two current goals that I am after:

5 years from now - $50,000,000 in total assets
Lifetime - $500,000,000 in total assets

I 100% believe I will reach both of these goals enjoying every step of the road.

A person always wants more then he has (in general) so if you set a target of 1 million a year and achieve it, chances are that by the end of the year you will set your target to 2 million dollars (or more) a year and try to achieve that, with that you will have a whole lot of reasons why you ought to be earning more and what you have is not enough, at the end of the 3rd year it will be the same story and so on and so forth.

In short you cannot set a limit on how much you should earn cause as a human being your desires will keep increasing as your income increases.

    That was my two pence

I'm gunning for 1mil a year also. For where I am right now, it seems like a good amount to aim for.

Now the thing is people grow. When that goal is reached a new one needs to be set in place. I'm not quite sure if it's just a trap - a way in which our mind screws us over or if it's something good -something necessary for our evolution. What I am sure though is that it will happen.

Between the two, I'll find a sweet spot and choose a comfortable income while living a fulfilling life. But if time was not a problem, I would aim for the world not just that $1 million.

    Hi Matthew,

Yes, we can put a limit on how much is enough. Sort of.

What I mean is that we THINK we can set a limit on it based on our current reality, but once we get there, our reality changes, and so does the amount we think is enough.

On a slightly off topic note: if the word 'limit' is replaced with 'goal' then it becomes something worthy of shooting for.

    All the best,

Your expenses will generally increase to fit your income, regardless of what that may be. If you make more, you'll spend more, as a general rule.

I just need enough to pay the bills, have money leftover for some fun stuff like farm animals, in my case, and homebrewing, in my husbands case, and really, that's it.

I think it is very relative to the person you are asking, and their current state, because as your income changes so will the person and the state they are living in.

For me, I simply want to own a home outright, have enough in the bank that my 5 children can go to post secondary or do whatever they want to in their own lives, and enough to comfortably live for the rest of my life. Plus a little extra cushion because **** happens.

And then once I reach that point, I would like to double it. Not for me, but so that I can give the equivalent away to those in need.

    Best wishes,
    Sylvia

    Enough:

Once I get all the money I need to goof off the rest of my life... that will be enough...

    until

I see that yacht for $50 million that I just must have.. then when I have enough to buy that and run it ... that will be enough...

    until

I see that $100 million jet that I really really want...then when I have enough to buy and maintain that ... that will be enough...

    until

I see that country with 99% of the people starving which needs $4 Billion to get them by... if I had that ... that will be enough...

    until

I see all the children in the world that are missing, lost, hungry... and $20 billion would help solve that ... that will be enough...

    until...

Come to think of it.. the US Government alone has Trillions of revenue and Trillions of debt.. that that is not enough...

I guess I just don't know the meaning of enough

My goal is to earn £100,000 per year by the time I'm 20, I'm 17 in 6 days. For me, that is more than acheivable and being the cocky guy I am, I'd hope to be making that at 18.

That's only £8,500 approx per month and then £2,125 per week. It's all achievable, just have to be committed but to be honest, even now when I'm very young, I know that money doesn't make me happy.

My ultimate goal is to make £10,000,000 in pure cash, not assets and cash, pure green (not the herbal kind, though that would be nice) flowing in my account.

If your goals in life are monetary in nature then you will never find fullfillment. When you reach your goal the desire for more will always take precedent over everthing else, hence, you will always be controlled by your goal.

A proper balance in life will ensure you are in equlibrium, and will lead to greater fullfillment. There a 3 elements to our being, and we should always feed these areas with the right nutrients, i.e... food for the mind, food for the body, and food for the spirit!

I think a better goal is to make a goal for how much you keep/save a month... Then focus on that...

Start at $10k a month or whatever then when you hit that move it up to $25k a month and do what it takes to get there... Then $50k a month... Etc...

Thats how you get to the point where you can write a check for $1MM - and thats a whole lot different than being "worth" $1MM...

It depends on your goals in life.

A normal person would be happy with 10$ million.

It's funny how different "enough" can be for different people. Once you learn how to pay less in taxes and keep more of what you earn and then reduce your expenses while still having fun and having toys and then increasing your income as needed, "enough" can actually be a shrinking target rather than an increasing one...

To live on the interest on your interest...

    That's "enough"...

I think the super rich don't think that way. To get to "multi billionaire" for example, it takes much higher order thinking that just craving money for the sake of it. After all...at some point you'll never be able to spend it all on yourself.

I think you should measure your accomplishments in "impact" rather than "money." After all...money is not "real" and in the case of US dollars...actually a US Treasury debt that's traded for goods and services.

DISCLOSURE: Don't believe me? Read the bottom left corner of a US dollar bill and you'll see "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private"...a "note" is a term used to describe debt.

Moral of the post: Don't be focused on "enough"...focus on impact...money will come.

    Cheers,

For those interested in gaining lots of wealth I highly recommend the book called "The Millionaire Next Door." By interviewing lots of millionaires the authors found some really surprising facts about those in America that have lots of wealth. Note I did not say people that were worth a lot of money, the affluent, but rather people with wealth, ones that have the money in the bank.

Basically it boils down to much of what we read here. Making big money takes lots of work and for most of us a good deal of time. Keeping money by spending it wisely also takes work.

Ok, before I start rambling just go to the library, yup that's free, and get the book.

I still remember when I thought $1000 a month would
be enough to do almost everything I wanted...all I
wanted to do was make a grand a month.

And than I did it. It was an AMAZING feeling. I celebrated
and took my mom out to dinner...and for the first time in
my life I knew the prices on the menu did not hamper what
I wanted to eat that night.

I tipped better than average, and what that money
bought was a night out with my mom with no money
      strings attached.

And than...a week or two later, I KNEW I had to strive
for more. It wasn't a feeling of "lack" or not enough...
but that I set BIGGER goals to do things that would
require MORE than a $1000 monthly income.

$1000 isn't enough to move into my dream home or
travel the world in style. Or hold family reunions...
or take a private plane...or go sky-diving, or..

So here I am, close to making my first 10k month,
      and a month later I'll be making 20k - 40k a month.

And who knows...I might want more...but it won't
be for needy reasons. Just goals and score.

"Enough" is loaded language. It is dangerously vague, and means nothing apart from the purposes for said money.

"Enough" is the language of the poverty mind.

    Enough for who?

    Just me?

Or just me and my family?

Or just me and my family to just get by?

Or just me and my family to live comfortably?

Or just me and my family to live nicely?

And if it is just for me and everything related to me...what does that say about me?

The reality, there is no enough. That should never be a word used by wealth builders if they look at the big picture of self and neighbor. We are accountable for way more than just what surrounds us.

Anyone who says a certain amount is "enough," often times are only really thinking of themselves.

I am sure many other people who could use my help would not say I ever have made "enough."

Write down your current cost of living plus everything you would want to have or do ... break it down to how much it will cost you in a year. Then break it down to how much it will cost you in a month, add 10% (just in case), and then you have a rough idea of how much is "enough". Of course, your idea of enough is likely to go up as you get more successful.

To be really happy requires more than just money.
Health, wealth and love are all needed in this regard.
Wealth could be defined by some as a sufficiency of supply.
But if you are sick and dying i doubt that having a lot in your bank acct makes much difference, or at least not to you. lol

But since this is a thread about money, as limited as such a discussion is, I have two ultimate goals for this-one a monthly goal, that has four sub goals towards acheiving my ultimate monthly target.
And the second ultimate goal for the total amount i want to be invested as untouchable principle. (in other words, i want to live off that, have it grow to keep up with inflation, and never spend it down) That goal also has levels(level one, two and three) to it. I call them my so so,
excellence, and SMOKING goals. Excellence is 3 times so so, smoking is 10 times.
I could never work again at level one but would have few extras.
But you know what-I dont care to say what the specific $ are, because no one else needs to know. And it depends on a lot of factors including where you wish to live.
My own "4 walls economy" matters to me and mine. Nuff said.

I'm surprised some people are so vague with this. I want enough money to fund my traveling, and writing and that is more then enough. Also I intend to invest some of it, and live off the interest.
