How to actually find a niche? Please help me out!

First of all, I am a newbie. I have already spent over 100$ buying WSOs. All of them says that find a NICHE. All start with Dog Training NICHE as the example and then mention the various of techniques like providing people free content, build list and so on and on. I have already spent a week reading these eBooks and reports. Even bought Market Samurai for Keyword Researching but got no results. I just end up with a bunch of keywords with high competition. I see a lot of WSOs claiming to help us get more traffic and works with any NICHE. But how to do actually the KEYWORD RESEARCH AND FIND A NICHE? I am really confused over this thing, badly need the solution. I think all the Warriors and Gurus do a lot of keyword research daily and dominate them, so no niche is left for me to start with. Is it? I really need your advice. Please take out of this confusion and show me some light.

  • Hi

Can I maybe suggest a different approach. IM can be difficult enough as it is without having to work in a niche you have no interest in. Therefore, have you thought about starting with your interests first and use them to narrow down the niches to work in.

    Just a thought.

Whatever you decide on I wish you all the very best in your endevours.

    regards

If you have bought market samurai, type in your keyword in the keyword research. Generate keyword from your keyword and filter the competition to your liking and you got your niche. For indepth research, check the seo competition of your keyword to see if it is easy to rank for that keyword.

I'm going to suggest a different approach. Go to Clickbank and browse through what's on offer. Try to find a product with a good sales page and in an area that interests you.

When you've found what you think is a good product, then do some keyword research around that product.

Try to find an aspect of that product that interests you so that you can write about it.

Don't worry too much about high and low competition keywords. They are that way for a reason.

Recently a couple of people have posted on here asking why they are getting no sales when their site is no1 for its keyword. The answer was the same in both cases - they were using a "keyword" that simply wasn't getting any searches.

I agree with Rosetrees here. Just to add to that, make sure you use article marketing to drive traffic to your sales page. ezines is a great article directory.

As for your keywords shoot for some long tail keywords (4 or more words) if you are in a very competitive market and then incorporate these keywords into your article marketing- title, content, anchor text, etc.

There many methods to go about it, but here's one in a nutshell:

pick a product you like (one that is doing well on the market)
do some article marketing with your keywords to drive traffic to sales page

However, it would be in your best interest to set up a squeeze page and collect emails so you can continue to market to your customer base. Therefore you would:

        • order a domain name (good idea to incorporate keywords in it if you can)
        • upload sqeeze page to your server (can buy cheap ones, just google it)
        • offer a free product with signup (can get cheap plr ones)
        • drive traffic to your site with article marketing and using social networking
market paid products to your customer base over and over...of course make sure you are giving them lots of free valuable content as well. I hope this goes without say.

        Good luck!

A good way to browse through Yahoo answers and see what people are asking alot of questions about. For example, just log on to the front page, then browse through recent questions and popular questions.

If you find an interesting question (need/problem) do some research and turn that into your niche (cure/solution).

With any keyword research, you do, the number of competing sites is going to be high. This is actually a good thing because that means there is interest. The only thing that actually matters is the the top 10 sites/pages listed in the search results. You decide on the niche that interests you and then look at that top 10 list of sites/pages and see what they are doing.

I believe Market Samuri has a competion module that will help with this.

Also look at this post "Secret Keyword Research Tip" - it will dispel some of the competition myth.

    Hope this helps.

      Neon,

In a nutshell, you want a niche that in good times or bad, you will stick with. I.E. there are more than enough two-minute experts out there in niches. To really compete and earn income, dig in your heels.

Develop your business around only a couple things, if not one main thing: something you can talk on and on and on about, something you can write on and on and on about. Know your competition - -and stay up to date in your niche.

    Hi n3on,

The best way is to go to relevant forums for your niche, going through yahoo answers and amazon makes it clear if it is a in-demand topics for your niche.

I usually spend about 1 hour doing research on in-demand topics daily.

    Hope it helps.

what a ton of great help you guys are!

I'm wondering, would anyone entertain me for a moment? What if we followed this to its logical end?

Someone posted a ton of keywords so let me just pick these:

bath, cast iron bath, cheap bath, whirlpool bath

So you're crazy about baths, you love cast iron baths, always are looking out for cheap baths and own a whirlpool bath. Get me? you like baths so you want to market them.

So then you would most likely look at the competition for those keywords. Can someone who knows better than I take a look at that competition and tell us what you notice about it? What are the steps to determining if this is a market that is easily broken into?

Google and SEOQuake will tell me 90% of what I need to know in most cases. For more difficult ones, there's Market Samurai.

Basically, it's a matter of experience that comes from looking at and competing in large number of different niches. IMO, you won't get the hang of doing niche selection without playing the game, just like you won't learn a sport from reading a book or watching a video. You have to get out there and play the game and not be afraid to fail.

To go back to your tub keywords and extract a lesson from it, think about what you could do to compete against this site: Clawfoot Tubs, Free Standing Clawfoot Tub Faucets, Cast Iron and Acrylic Clawfoot Tubs, Claw Foot Bathtub Accessories | Vintage Tub & Bath

What makes it strong? What are its weak points? Why is it ranking for so many vintage tub related search terms? What strategy could you use to grab a part of this niche?

Depends what you want to do.

For me, I build mini adsense sites so I would go to a site like Baths

Then I would get further keywords like:

        acrylic baths
        thermaform baths
        showering baths
        roll top baths
        freestanding baths
        steel baths
        bath panels
        bath wastes
        acrylic bath
        thermaform bath
        showering bath
        roll top bath
        freestanding bath
        steel bath
        bath panel

then I plug those into market samurai

        analyze

        arrange by SEOTCR

start checking seo competition on each individual keyword if it has enough search volume

so I check "steel baths" and I see that there are only a couple of sites that have done a decent job of on page seo title, url, desc, head and the ones that have done a decent job don't have many backlinks, that means I will target this keyword.

After further checking, "freestanding bath" is another potential target.,

freestandingbath.org has the number 10 spot with no backlinks, ic of 12, just simply an exact domain and Title Desc Head

One way to decide on choosing a niche you need to ask yourself would I this for free and same time find a field that excites you. To come up with new niche idea look closely at your resume, like what are your hobbies and what kind of social groups you are belong to and have belong to, look at your work experience. Once you lean toward one niche go to amazon for more sub-niche ideas just simply click through category section to break down even more for narrow targeted sub-niche. Of course once done with your niche research you'll need to figure out there is actually market for your newly found niche and you need to perform keyword research, etc. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Regardless of how long you have been marketing, I always suggest that you pick a topic that interest you, and that you have some kind of knowledge in.

Absolutely! Kev beat me to the punch!

If you're in this for the long haul, you're going to have to get a niche that you can be interested in day in and day out. You're going to have to research, write, and promote, so make sure the niche you choose excites you. If you're bored with your niche, visitors will pick up on it. Conversely, if you're very passionate and knowledgeable about your niche, people will pick up on that, too.

One word of caution, though - if you're going to head into a very competitive niche (like dating or weight loss), you're going to need something that sets you apart. You will (literally) have millions of competitors, so you'll have to think about what makes you different, so that you don't just blend in with everyone else. After all, you don't want to do all this work and get lost in the shuffle!

      Good luck!

My main blog is about the hiking, camping, backpacking, fishing, hunting,,,, niche. Everytime I get a new backpack, new gloves, go camping, go fishing, go out on the boat,,, it gives me a chance to film some videos, take some pictures and make notes for articles.

When you do something you enjoy, you should never have a problem finding content.

Its when people pick niches that they know nothing about, or do not enjoy - that is when the problems start.

Its the difference if you want to create a sales site, or a site with quality and unique content on it.

Instead of creating 12 sites - 1 for each topic, I would rather create 1 site, with 12 different categories that are related to each other.

Sure, you could buy a Build a Niche Site (BANS) script, and have a site up and running within a matter of minutes. If your only goal is to make money, then sure, that might suite your needs.

But I'am after several goals - and 1 is to build a long term project site that is also an authority site in its topic.

            People remember sites like Cnet.
Who really remembers a buy-this-widget-now.com site?

I decided a long time ago that I'd rather have money than fame.

While building a big winner of a website that's worth millions like CNet, Amazon or Facebook is great, it's a very unlikely scenario, probably on par with being a professional baseball pitcher (what I dreamed about as a kid).

Instead, I'm following the pattern established by largely unknown marketing people that sell billboard space and print ad space or market "as seen on TV" products like the shamwow or slapchop. You probably don't know who these people are but they have a passion for promoting a wide variety of products and making a huge amount of money doing so.

I was going to say the same thing. I pick things I don't care about all the time. Definitely more often than niches I do care about. My main focus is to stay on top of trends and know what's selling. Funny we both live in Atlanta too . I go to Amazon and find what's selling. I pick a product then find a product(s) on clickbank to supplement it. Hybrid sites are my favorite. I never dedicate an entire site to amazon, clickbank, or whatever.

just pick a market where you know people are spending money, see how other people are promoting stuff in that niche, copy their style (not content just the approach) and you'll be fine.

Heck, you could sell a WSO in the make money niche...(a proven winner if done correctly)

    Hi Neon,

You have plenty of good practical advice there, as well as a mindblowing list of niches from two generous Warriors. What I want to offer you is this, because I picked up a 'vibe' from you in your original post. Don't get despondant! This happens to newbies who expect too much too soon - mainly because of the overblown hype out there - and the disappointment is the gap between initial expectations and the stark reality of how much work this will take.

Market Samurai is a quality product. Learn how to use it and be patient. If you think internet marketing is a tough way to make money - have a look at the backbreaking work millions have to do to just survive. You'll be time and money free if you get good at this, and you won't even have to risk quitting your job to build it. Get your head right!

Good luck, be positive and stay positive

Basically, it's a matter of experience that comes from looking at and competing in large number of different niches. IMO, you won't get the hang of doing niche selection without playing the game, just like you won't learn a sport from reading a book or watching a video. You have to get out there and play the game and not be afraid to fail.
This is exactly the advice anyone needs to follow if they want to learn good keyword research.
