How Would I Track This?

This is probably simple, but I'm not sure how to set this up. Maybe someone here can help.

I have a site where I will be putting advertising banners for offline businesses.

For their sake and my sake, I would like to track how many clicks a particular banner gets.

The click will send the person to the offline business' web site.

Can I set up a redirect page so the click goes to the redirect page, gets tracked, and then goes to the offline business' site?

If so, what kind of tracking goes on a redirect page? Would Google analytics work or a simple click tracker?

Or, is there a better way to set this up?

Sounds like what you're after is all achievable using OpenX. I use it a lot - we carry ads for offline businesses, affiliate programs adsense - you name it - it tracks it , will track views, clicks, and mail them out to your clients if set up correctly.

Open X looks a little robust for my purposes.

Actually, I'm looking for a free (and simple) way to do this.

Well, it is free if you download and install it. And its really not that difficult if you follow the instillation instructions. Worth giving a shot if your planning on growing to more than a few ads...

Ok, I'll take a closer look at Open X.

      Any other ideas?

What you suggested with a redirect/refresh would work as it would be seen by most stats programs - but it will only tell you clicks, not impressions.

But do think seriously if you're planning on growing the business OpenX (or similar) will save you tons of time in the longer term managing ads - it'll also allow different ways to sell the ads, fixed fee, by impression, by clicks...

I guess it depends on your plans..
