Google beat Yahoo because Google knew exactly what business they were in, and excelled at that business.

Search.

Yahoo wanted to be the all-encompassing portal that gave you everything on the web inside of a Yahoo page.

Michael is correct....and many so-called experts thought giant Yahoo would crush the little G upstart....amongst many ways to compare them, just look at their stock prices ..wow, what a difference!

The fact of the matter is that both companies have done very, very well.

Its always easy to see things in hind sight, and I would bet that most people here - if not every last one of us, would have bet on Yahoo rather than Google back in 1999. Thats how radical Google was in keeping things so utterly simple on their search page.

Google picked a niche focused on it, became the best at it before trying to diversify, yahoo tried to excel at every niche thus mastering none a lot of marketers could learn from this.

Google beats Yahoo basically for its relevancy on keywords particularly every search term that every user may type into the search engine. Google has this genius when it comes to search so definitely, users find it more useful.

Google delivers better results so people stick to Google - that is the unique selling point of Google. If Yahoo or Bing can deliver such results people would move to them!

Was Yahoo even the preferred search engine before Google stormed in? I used many but mainly Altavista. Yahoo was always Yaauck! The results were messy and nothing has changed.

Google succeeded over Yahoo because they were able to find how to give the best experience and give their users instant gratification.

They also split tested how many ads/page were effective.
