Analytics - Bounce Rate

Can someone explain to me how bounce rate in Google Analytics is calculated? I am struggling to understand the % value.

  • Bounce rate indicates how much people have left the landing page before visiting another page in your website.
  • Bounce rate is the percentage of people who arrived on any page of your site and then left your site (without going to any other pages of your site).

    Often referred to as "I came, I puked and left".

  • Here's a question:

    If I have a review style page where the sole aim is to get the user to opt-in or to click my aff link wouldn't that contribute to a very high bounce rate?

    So in the above scenario a very high bounce rate could be good/bad depening on whether they clicked the external link or closed the page?

    Or am I completely off base?

    • Basically, you should sit down and think about what pages exactly are you advertising.

      If you're trying to get loyal readers, high bounce rate is probably bad.

      When your goal is to get opt-ins and you're getting them, you could not care less about the bounce rate...
    • You are not off base. We often want our visitors to leave; we just want them to leave in a preferred way--i.e., via check-out, affiliate link or even Adsense ad.
  • Thanks for that as I hadn't made the connection about high bounce rates and my adsense and CB links ...duh...maybe I should be proud of a high bounce as long as my aff sales are doing well...

    • Bounce rate % can be good OR bad, dependent on the nature/content/goals of the site.
  • I actually never knew that about bounce rates.

    So, if your home page is a sales letter with a buy now button at the end, and that's the first page they saw, then the bounce rate doesn't matter. They don't need to visit any other page in your site. They just need to buy.

    For some reason, I thought it had to do with time spent on the page. I always ignored BR, and now I'm glad I did.

  • They don't have to go back to where they came from. Leaving after visiting one tracked page will count as a bounce.
