Do you coordinate article submissions with sites like HubPages?

Ok, I have 4-5 websites that I currently own and want to drive traffic to. For the most part, they are just blogs with advertising but I'm moving towards adding some email opt-in forms. Regardless, my goal is traffic and SEO boosts to these websites.

What I want is some solid advice on how to leverage article directories plus my hubpages page (well-established).

A couple questions...

1. do you write articles and submit them to article directories and then link to those articles with "hubs"?

2. or do you view hubpages as another form of an article directory?

3. overall, how do you use both article directories and hubpages as a part of your whole strategy?

Google loves hubs. I'll write a hub and then submit to article directories with one of my links pointing back to the hub in my resource box to create back links. I have several hubs that have climbed to the top of google using this method.

Is it really worth it spending time creating backlinks to other sites including hubpages rather than spending that time creating backlinks to one's site?

I am not against posting articles/creating pages at these Web 2.0 properties though. I think that helps.

Is it still effective to simply just submit your articles to directories and get quality traffic that way?

You need to place original content on a Hubpage (their rules), so no using articles there that you submit to article directories.

If you are trying to link your content, inserting an article directory RSS feed into your Hubpage is a good idea.

In article resource boxes, placing a Hub link is fine, but I'd have a 2nd link there, one to your main site (or one of them) to max out your coverage.

Hubpages and Squidoo lenses work like article directories but they have an added advantage like advertising and placing your own products for sale. There is no limitation in repeating keywords or placing affliate links.
