Anyone Outsource to Cebu City?

I have some blog builders in Cebu City in the Philippines, and have not heard from them in a couple of days. Didn't know if they have quit, or if there is power/internet issues there.

They do a good job, they work cheap, but they are just kids. Nothing surprises me anymore. A month ago they went to Manila for the weekend and didn't make it back until the following Tuesday and forgot to tell me they were going to be late... :-)

There are many more looking for jobs. May be time to switch blog builders.

Cebu City is a modern city. They are not going to lose power for a whole 2 days unless a serious catastrophe happens. They will have brownouts, but I think you just need to wait and see. As you said, they are just kids.

Los Angeles is a modern city too that had a brown out for almost a week in the summer of 2008. Brown outs can happen just about anywhere.

There have been a lot of storms in the Philippines lately. They recently had a typhoon that killed quite a few people and put them out of power for 2 days. I have a crew of employees in Manila right now and they've been great. One thing I would suggest is just establish check-in periods or regular meetings at established times. If they don't check in with you, check the Filipino news. Usually it's because something is up with the weather.

I live in the Philippines, but not Cebu. It is about an hour from me. I can tell you from first hand experience, it is not a power issue. When there are blackouts (in the PI they call them brownouts) - they don't occur in the whole city, just parts of the city. Unless of course there is a major catastrophe. I live about 1 hour North of Cebu, by plane, so I can tell you there has been no catastrophe.

I have brown outs everyday, and they last from 20-mins to 3 hours. If the people you have working in Cebu were hard workers, they could easily take a jeepney to an internet cafe in a different part of Cebu.

Bottom line - from a guy who lives here. Your blogger is lazy, or is not interested in blogging for you anymore.

Sounds like you can't judge this one event. But if their disappearances become a problem then either you aren't setting expectations well, or they just don't care. If it is the later you already know what to do

Hi there, we're based in the Philippine as well. If you have decided to switch your blog builder and you have started to find a new one, you can speak with me.

    @mmixon:

I live in the Philippines and in a province at that, not a big city. When we do have blackouts, we have it at a few hours at the most and not 2 whole days.
Still, even if I don't have power or an internet connection, I make it a point to inform my employers of my situation - either by going to an internet cafe with a standby generator or use my phone's gprs service to send my employers a quick email of my situation.
That being said, power interruptions are very rampant in our country. That, and internet service interruptions, as well. From experience, I have lost my internet connection for 4 days before it was restored. So even if I had power, I still can't do any work. But, it shouldn't be a reason for them not being able to inform you of the situation. As I mentioned, there are ways and means.
Just ask your contractors what their problem is. Most of the time, it is just communication issues that can easily be remedied. I hope that helps.

lol, I am an American and live in Pampanga Philippines at the moment and while everyone is right brownouts lasting a couple days would be extremely rare they do occur. Especially if work is being done in your area on power lines.

Secondly, Where in the USA you would expect the internet to work all the time and expect fast service if it was out, that simply is not the fact in the Philippines. Losing internet for a day or two is all too common. I have seen the same problem on two different providers.

If you do not have your Bloggers cell phone numbers you are screwing up. Download a program called Chikka and setup where you can text their phones. No matter where they are you can be sure of one thing with a Filipino, they have their cell phone and they are texting, even if they are driving, walking down the street in traffic, or walking through a crowd in the mall. For the average under 30 Filipino their cell phone is their life. (Yes, Filipinos you can argue with me, but you know I'm right.)

(They may tell you they do not have a load, but if you send a text saying they have 2 hours to reply or you are taking your business elsewhere, the load will suddenly appear on their phone.)

I agree. Nationals from Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar etc are heavy users of cellphones. I cannot fathom how someone can spend a few hours on the cellphones and wasting a substantial portion of their income. :p They not only texting but also speaking on their phones.

No wonder telcoms are making a lot of money from them.
