Wordpress 3.0 Multisite A few questions

Just a couple quick questions if you don't mind. I've serached all over and either couldn't find the answer or couldn't understand what I was reading..... I really hate when that happens I'm trying to decide if going down this path will have any real benefit to my particular application.

1. Can WP 3.0 be used to manage sites on other accounts/servers?
2. Can the "child" sites or blogs be set up so that they appear under their own url?

for example http://www.childsite1.com

vs... either http://childsite1.mydomain.com or http:///www.mydomain.com/childsite1.

3. If the answer to 2 is "yes"... does childsite1 have to be on the same account/server?
and/or
Does this still require setting up the new account through cpanel?

Thanks!!!

chris

    Yes to both.

You have WP3 installed on example.com.
You create "sites" in your Network on subdomains or subfolders, e.g.
    site1.example.com or example.com/site1
Then you park a domain on (top of) example.com; parked-domain.com
Finally, using the domain mapping plugin you set example.com/site1 to show up on parked-domain.com

No need for new account for "parked", on the contrary, it shouldn't have any setup except being parked.

      Istvan, THANK YOU!!!

Just to clarify.... If what's important to me is that the child site shows up on parked-domain.com... it doesn't matter if I put the site in either a subdomain or sub-folder.

      cheers,
      chris

It doesn't matter. On some hosts it is easier to use just subfolders, if the subdomain creation "on the fly" (i.e. wild card subdomains) is not allowed.

You can read more about it in my report
    (shameless self-promo...)

      LOL "...shameless self-promo..." LOL

Maybe so, but 100% on the money. Thanks so much Istvan. Exactly what I needed.

      Cheers,

Chris, another way to go about this is at your domain registrar. Look for a setting called "host records" or similar. If the feature is available, it will allow you to point the domain name at any specific URL you choose.

EDIT: the actual setting is "CNAME", which you can set to any URL you choose.
