This is a long post with full details. Just wanted to warn you up front as I know some of you are just too lazy, even when all details are posted up freely like this!

It's a simple copy and paste from my private materials. I cleaned up most of it but some line breaks and formats might be out:

Ok so I've been getting some great feedback on a recent case study/tutorial I made available.

Many Warriors have emailed saying it's nice to see this info laid out etc. So I thought I'd make it available for you too. Enjoy.

Niche: Pet care
Total spent: $9 (and no further costs – I already had hosting)
Total revenue: $683 (still growing, and is fully automated)
Total profit: $674
Time invested: 2 hours daily, for 6 days = 12 hours

This tutorial is an example to the cornerstone of a 5+ figure a month affiliate income.

It often helps in affiliate marketing if you have cash to spend. This can be used for advertising which usually lets you get quick results, which you can then make profitable very quickly.

But if you don't have cash to spare you can still get into affiliate marketing. All you need is a slightly different angle of attack.

You can pretty much do this all for free with SEO and web 2.0 marketing. Also keep in mind that after the first seven days, I haven't done anything extra with this project.



But my site is still on the first page of Google for the main product keyword. This is a good advantage of using the combination of SEO and web 2.0 marketing instead of PPC.

Step 1:

You need a really good product to promote. If you get this right that is half your success right there.

What I like to do is search for any successful product in a particular market place. Then look to see which of those successful products has a new version coming out soon.

If the original product was successful then you know for sure that the new version will definitely be a good seller.

For example, Brad Callen released Keyword Elite which was a big seller. Lots of people liked it. So naturally, when I heard that Keyword Elite 2.0 was going to be released, I knew that lots of people would be searching for it and buying it.

You can find out about a few future product launches from Joint Venture (JV) Lists, Announcements, Blogs, And Community Forums. (this covers most new Clickbank products only though, not other networks).

So like I said, I chose to work with a pet care product from an author who already had two successful products before this current one.

Step 2:

From my previous experiments, I know that Google gives a lot of importance to your domain name. So I decided to register a domain with the product name in it.

Imagine that the product was called Frog Care, and the main domain was called frogcare.com (totally made up for this example).

You could register:

Frogcare.xxx (frogcare,co.uk, frogcare.org, frogcare.info, frogcare.net etc)
Frog-care.com
Frog-care.xxx
Frog-care-review.xxx
Frog-care-scams.xxx
Secret-frog-care.xxx etc.

Just try to have the product name in the URL. You can add whatever you want before or after the product name as well. After you start adding content to the site and structure it correctly, you will get all the traffic on the product name search.

Step 3:

Now we need to create the website. For this I use WordPress.

WordPress is a great platform for building a quick website which will be loved by the search engines. Whether you want to build a small affiliate website or 1000 page online monster site, WordPress is the platform you need.

You can use CPanel at your host, and use Fantastico to install WordPress to a new domain name within 30 seconds (literally).

Once I did this I used a free theme which has a nice left-hander sidebar. I also created a quick image for the header.

Step 4:

In the header image for my site, I added the image of the product on sale. I also used a photo of the author with a huge call to action.

I added an opt in box which offered my visitor a free report in exchange for their e-mail address (the report was actually provided by the product author - you can create a quick 5 page report very easily for any product if you need to, do a web search for info you need).

The first post was made to the site. The title was big and bold with another call to action. This post was also made sticky for the front page so that it is always displayed on the front page of my website. This post should basically be the review or more information on the product itself.

I also created 3 other posts about the product, and related categories.

I created one single post which linked to a YouTube video (link to your own video if you can, or a related video if you don’t have time).

Step 5:

Optimise your SEO.
  • Use the all in one SEO plug-in for WordPress.
  • Use different titles and different descriptions for each of your pages and posts.
  • Add ALT text for each of your images.
  • Use the H1 tag on each of your pages and posts.
  • Add a few H2 tags on you pages and posts.
  • Use your specific keyword for that page/post in the H1 and H2 tags.
  • Use your specific keyword for that page/post near the start, middle and end of the page.
  • Use the keyword in the page/post name (so the url for the individual page/post will have the keyword in it).
  • Use a SILO structure for your site (this is really useful).

A SILO structure for a car website would look like:

Cardomain.com/ford/mustang.html
Cardomain.com/ford/f150.html
Cardomain.com/dodge/charger.html
Cardomain.com/dodge/viper.html

Etc.
Use The Google Wonder Wheel:

Use the Google wonder wheel to find LSI keyword for your main keyword. Use those LSI keywords in your posts and pages.

Here’s an example of how I find LSI keywords if my main keyword is “Chrysler Cars”:


Do the search in Google as usual. Then click on show options:







Next, go to standard view > Wonder wheel:








And you will see the wonder wheel for your main keyword which you just typed in:







Be sure to use these keywords within your posts and pages, H1 and H2 tags, your site description and your site content. This will help to create the theme of your site.

This has helped me a lot, with ranking my sites. I often don’t have any backlinks to my website, and they still rank in the top spots. This is because of the on page SEO that I’ve shown you above.

Finally, once you've done all this, you'll need to create a XML sitemap for your site, and submit it to Google. You can do this with this plugin here:

Step six:

Get some traffic.

You will need some targeted traffic to monetise your affiliate offer. A really effective way to do this is with web 2.0 marketing.

There are lots of web 2.0 properties that you can use. For my example above I used:


YouTube
Viddler
Yahoo Video
Digg
HubPages
Squidoo
Kping
Pingomatic

What I did was make a small Powerpoint slide show related to pet care. I made this with info that I found online. It was just some interesting facts about the pet I was targeting and some info that they could try out as well.

Then I recorded the presentation with Camtasia Studio (free trial at Screen Capture, Screen Recorder, Video Hosting, and Usability Testing Software) and ended up with a short video on pet care. Then I uploaded the video to the web 2.0 video properties.

I also created 2 articles and then submitted them to the individual blogs at HubPages, Squidoo etc.

Finally I created an account with Digg and gave a dig to my site. I also ran my Digg url through the KPing and Pingomatic services. This was all free.
Step 7:

Additional Tips

Focus your affiliate site on the main product itself. Don’t be tempted to use Adsense or any similar distractions on your site. You’ve worked to get the visitor to the page. If they are going to leave your website it should ideally be because they want to buy the main product (in this case, the pet care product).

Add a contact me, privacy policy, and disclaimer page on your site as well. This will please Google, and is good webmaster practice.

Try and have an opt in box for your visitors as well. This will let you communicate with an interested and targeted audience, later on.

I actually use a paid service for this, aweber.com. But remember, this step is optional so you can leave it until you are making money if you really need to.
The end result:

After I submitted the XML sitemap to Google, I left the site as it was. My site was indexed in 24 hours.

My online videos were also indexed in 24 hours.

And within 6 days my site was in the number 1 position for the product keyword. The actual product sales site was coming in at the number 2 spot in Google! The number 3 spot was………. my YouTube video!

Within 11 days my site had taken up 6 places on the 1st page of Google. So 6 out of the 10 results on the 1st page were actually my site results.

And that’s the affiliate marketing tutorial to follow if you want make $683 in revenue! Remember that $683 is still growing, completely on auto pilot.

That is a testament to the fact that, if you are willing to invest some time with direction and guidance, there really is little barrier or overhead for just about anyone to get started in affiliate marketing. Unfortunately, all to often, people just shoot arrows into the wind with a serious hit-or-miss strategy....

    Personally...and, this is if I were just starting out....I'd take that $674 profit and reinvest into some other tools/services, like Market Samurai, ALTHOUGH, everything you mentioned can be done without MS (although it would certainly be a nice complement)

    It seems as though the same WF procrastination system kicks in EVERY SINGLE time someone puts up a nice post with a good actionable system.

    Look, procrastination has hit all of us at some point, right? The main isue is this:

    The MORE time you spend finding ways that this thing won't work or asking questions, the less time you are gonna have to KICK BUTT using the system.

    The BEST thing you can do right now is to stop thinking of loopholes and niggly issues, and read STEP 1 again. Then go and DO IT - the more time you spend here reading and finding problems with the system, the less time you have to make it work for you

    THis is not a rant, btw, its a helpful hint. I used to do the same - incessantly ask questions until I would talk myself out of doing something

    Just go ahead and GET IT DONE!

      It IS perfectly acceptable to ask questions, but may I suggest you don't ask any until you start taking action. Many times the questions will be answered as you start taking action. Not only that, the questions will be different.

      Now, if you start and have questions, then ask away. That's my advice.

      At the same time, the OP was so detailed and valuable that any additional answers are going above and beyond the call of duty, IMHO.

  • I use a similiar method and have learnt that even sites that flop can be profitable. For the time invested, which is minimal, you can always onsell the ones that dont perform quickly on flippa for a couple o' bucks.

    • Trust me, this is not difficult like some people are thinking. Most people can't be bothered to test and track properly.

      I have made $106k in affiliate commissions in one year with $9k in spending with one simple PDF file I created. That was just one affiliate promotion for one product.

      And that was only after I got a little volume behind it. When I started out there was hardly any volume as I was still testing, and I spent around $200 one time, to make nearly $7000 a month. I treasured that bank statement when I got it, because it showed me what was possible.

      That all grew out of a silly test I ran, where I got the idea off someone else, and gave it a few twists and turns to make it a little viral while still carrying it myself.

      It grew to a level where I was given a VIP affiliate manager and regularly asked if I wanted free tickets to X event etc. If you can make someone money, they do anything to keep you at it.

      Also, you might even dislike the way I see myself - I'm not an affiliate marketer.

      I'm a problem solver. Solve issues, give value, test on a small scale, try new ideas, track results, appeal to core values (being admired, being better then the rest etc), position my offers as the most important, take online marketing offline, find new traffic sources to scale offers, include affiliate offers inside your free + paid products, have affiliate offers on your thank you pages as upsells, use video marketing where search engines can't follow duplicate content etc.

      I test niches, and products with traffic sources. I run tests and get a bunch of results back. The money is in those results that come back.

      Most people are afraid to make a loss. But you shouldn't be. If I spend $100 and make only $10 with a $90 loss then that's ok. Why? Because when I go through the data, I'll see where I made $10. Then I can switch off the rest of the traffic that lost money, and keep on making that $10, and scaling it upwards.

      That's how it's done.

      And today with recurring affiliate payments, it doesn't take too much effort to make enough money to quit your job etc. You can roll a little snowball and grow it into something big.

      It's actually easier then many people would let you believe.

      No page for ford by itself, ford is simply a category where posts about ford cars are placed. Search engines LOVE to see you have a organised site structure. You will also be rewarded for it, by a higher search engine placement. Organise your site like you would the folders on your hard drive ie very intuitively.

      This was originally a case study for a private list I have. That list is no longer available to join though, it's long since been closed. I still use it though, and I still have all the content from it.

      I recently made this original info available for my recent WSO though, and so many Warriors have emailed to say they liked it. So I thought I'd put it on the forum to help out if you don't have a lot of cash, but you still want to make some.

      I've made it as simple as I can without making the entire tutorial too long. If you are still having issues, you need to follow the tutorial and use a search engine to search for terms you are not familiar with etc. I guarantee this will make you money if you follow the above steps (I've seen it work in front of me, that's how I know).

      Everything I tell you is tried and tested info - no theory.

      What I meant was, the income is automated. Because the site ranks in the search engines, people still interested in the original product are landing on this site, and buying the product without me doing any additional work.

      In this sense, I haven't had to do any additional work to make more commissions from this site.

    • It took around 3-4 days, as I was riding off the product launch. There was a flurry of users trying to get this product and it really took a life of it's own one I'd set the site up.

      Every time I logged back into my Clickbank account there'd be more sales. And I literally did nothing after I did the above set up.

      I have one major objection though. I've been using Digg for over a year now and there's no way in hell you could get some decent traffic with new account and 1-2 submissions... so backlinks perhaps, but I'd be very surprised if anything else...

    For clarification:
    You put up 1 or 2 sites? In your results, you said your site was #1 and your product sales site was #2. ???

    You are promoting "How to build an effective mouse trap" so your domain name will be "howtobuildeffectivemousetrap.com" But you are giving away "Tips for Building Mouse Traps" for your opt-in customers.

    Do you require your visitor to opt-in before sending them to your promotion page? Or does the visitor have both options?

    Is your PPT presentation about the product you are promoting, or about the topic in general?

    When you get an opt-in to your autoresponder list, what do you send them?

      These articles were drip fed over a few days. You want Google to see you have added some content (by pinging) then wait a day or two then add more, then ping, then wait 2 days and add more, then ping, then wait one day then ping etc etc.

      This way Google can see you add content often.

      You actually train Google to visit your site often. I have sites where I add content and it is indexed in Google within a few minutes.

      I put up one site. I meant my site was #1 and the actual product sales site (the site I was promoting with my affiliate site) was in the SERPS below me.

      This is something you can test. I often give away great content then offer an optin. This is more risky but you get higher quality people on your list.

      Other times I'll try an opt in first. I use this for markets where they are not used to an opt in (do definitely not for internet marketing type products)!

      I always tell the viewer something they didn't know - almost like an educational video. Educate then instigate (what you want them to do).

    Regarding targeted traffic to monetise: Am I correct in assuming that you used the 2.0 properties to back link to your site or are you actually saying you received targeted traffic from the 2.0 sites ?


    Good job... You were able to get to a top ranking for key words very quickly, all (or almost all) of your monetized/converted traffic was actually organically generated through Search Engine Results... correct?

    and if you don't mind sharing: What was the approx global search numbers for your primary keyword.

    • With the silo structure, you literally create a theme and then have pages in each theme for the content you put in there. It's explained in the OP as well as I could, but if you have a specific question feel free to post it here.

      As for keyword density, I do sometimes check the info on the page as you don't want to get over 7%. But most of the time if you have good content, and a naturally written article, you don't need to worry too much about keyword density.

      Just make sure your keyword appears in the main places (H1 tags etc) and you're golden.

  • I recently went through the IPK program and Affiliatedotcom.com videos by Mike F and Chris Farrell. It was amazing how you seem to integrate most of what both of those are teaching. You took the SEO from IPK and the Affiliate Marketing model from Affiliatedotcom. Well, that's sorta what it looked like, except I read about your experience of taking on a product as it was being launched the day BEFORE Affiliatedotcom mentioned doing the same thing. lol

    It is beginning to appear to me that there are certain fundamentals to Internet Marketing that remain true forever. There really does not appear to be anything new. What comes up new, seems to be either one of two things. Either it is black-hat, it is based on something unstable, or it is merely a different arrangement of the fundamentals applied to work with a particular platform such as Facebook, etc. The first two seem to come and go on a daily basis, but the third method, based on the fundamentals, seem to stick around and make millionaires.

    Your product seems to be the latter.

      You're right Buck. There are always fundamentals which will work. They worked back in the 50's and they work right now.

      Learn them. These are the things that I study and am fascinated with. They will make you a better marketer, and you can translate that to affiliate marketing, offline marketing and all sorts of methods that you can use to generate an income.

      This is exactly what I do. The info in the OP here is simply new resources I used to practise these age old marketing methods.

  • I have bookmarked this thread and often refer it to newbies on WF who ask how to make money or need to know what to do with the money they have. Mostly, it is because this is a well laid out plan.

    It is not, however, the easiest thing to follow for a newcomer. Newcomers often lack the basics required to do what comes naturally for most of us like setting up a wp blog, autoresponder, etc.

    I like what Chris Farrell teaches in the first AM2 video. Chris finally came to the point where he stopped everything and started with only one step. He took that step and learned about it, applied it and then started building on it with the second step. Only after understanding the one step did he move to the next.

    If you know nothing, you can follow this course in the same way. Start with step one. If you have a problem, ask! You are here and there are plenty of people willing and able to help. Don't worry about knowing, applying or understanding step 2 until you can do that with step one.

    This will take time, even more so for a newbie, but take the time, learn it and do it. In the long run, it will be worth more than what you can throw up and make a fast buck today, only to find out it was obliterated by some third party who decided it was black-hat or against their TOS.

    If you are new to IM or if you are looking for a new program to follow for whatever reason, you are in a great place. Start here with step 1. If you don't know how to setup a WP blog, or find hosting, etc. Just ask. Do it one step at the time, and don't get ahead of yourself. Unsubscribe from all your email subscriptions and focus on this one thing.

    This will take time. But the time it takes will pass whether or not you start.

    Get started, stick it out! The time will pass and you will be glad you did.

    • Are you looking for a scraper to extract the info or just the actual wonderwheel which runs 9 levels deep? From what I understand, the depth of the wonderwheel will actually vary depending on:

      1. The popularity of the search term you used.
      2. The popularity of the related terms of the search term you used.

      So you wont always get a 9 level deep wonderwheel for every search term you enter.

  • It's a good plan, except for one thing, in my opinion.

    Using a product name in your website name can get you in trouble regarding copyrighting and trademarking. You may or may not be asked to immediately remove your domain by the owner of the product you are an affiliate for and/or even turn over the domain to them. And they'd have every right to do so.

    Otherwise, it's great, but those who don't know should watch out for something like this. Don't use copyrighted or trademarked names in your domain names, it's not worth it.

    • Yes, there is always the chance of a product owner who can ask you to hand over the name of a trademarked product, but in this case, I think most people would be using a product name which:

      - Wasn't trademarked
      - Was expected to be used in domain names (like most Clickbank products)

      I've actually used this method for a many major brands. If I was ever seen by the company and asked to hand over the domain, I would happily do so.

      But in most cases (and I speak as a multiple product owner) most merchants are happy to see the extra sales made by our affiliate sites that they will allow you to use their name, in smaller markets like Clickbank.

      I even do this with CJ and AffFuture products, and even they are happy to accept my extra leads and sales - they simply have rules listed in their program when you apply to be an affiliate with them.

      As long as you stick to these rules, you're ok.

      But for total protection - don't use a trademarked name. I personally feel it's being too careful though, and will continue to use them, as long as it's not against the merchant terms.

    How is the sales now on this site? As the launch is passed now, do you still have a decent income from it?

    Also, I am sometimes finding it difficult to rate a product from Clickbank and similar platforms, as they don't show, how many people refunded the product etc.

    If you did not know the vendor and you were still looking for a good product, is there anything you look at on the statistics other than the gravity. (I mean, this vendor has a new product )

      As mentioned, the site is now not making as many sales as it once used to. This is because the launch is now over and the product has been bought by most who want it. But it DOES still make sales as it is still close to the top of the SERPS.

      As for new vendors, look at the sales page of the product. Does it look awful with links all over the place or does it do a good job of selling + educating? Put yourself in the shoes of a prospect. Does it make you interested?

      It's hard to explain without showing you, but you will see the trends of good copy and sales techniques amongst all the top CB sellers.

      I actually have a method where I will throw a bunch of products all directly linked into adwords with a high bid, with very specific keywords.

      If you keep an eye on the impressions and clicks, you will ACTUALLY SEE which products are gaining traction in the market.

      Then I will pick out the leaders, and build them into a highly ranked site and also point my PPC ads there too.

      This way you get to do market research and cash in on the free traffic like above. It takes a little work - I wont lie. But when you have a stable of successful affiliate offers all making you passive income, it's worth it.

      You will also soon notice the patterns of a successful offer and your ratio of hitting a successful offer will increase more and more. The bottom line is more affiliate commissions in your account and that's always a good thing.

      That's a big secret I just revealed - hope it helps you out lots and you use it properly.

  • Hey, thanks for the post. I am about to start a project and follow everything you said. I do have a few questions , but I dont have enough posts to PM you. Should I post them here or could I email you? They're pretty specific, for example: I have a phrase (keyword) of three words. They're specific and they imply that people are considering purchasing. The domain name with the exact same phrase is free. However, the monthly search is about 1000 (google keyword tool). Is that too low? Should I be looking for keyword/phrases with more hits? It seems like those have more PPC ads at the top and on the side.

    Also, my website would be redirecting to an affiliate drop-shippers, and it wouldn't be a specific product. That probably means less money in commissions, but if that phrase works, I could pretty much bust out another 50 in the same niche.

    Let me know if something smells like I'm not on the right track here.

    I have a question from an SEO point of view.

    I was researching creating a silo structure in wordpress and noticed some people recommend using categories and a plugin or two to create the silo effect, where some people suggest recommend using pages and subpages to create the desired silo structure.

    May I ask which you prefer? Do you use the Pages, or the Categories to create the silo structure on your site?

    • I don't know about anything officially from Google. They're not exactly the most forthcoming company when it comes to their search engine algorithms (understandably)!

      But I know from my tests Google LOVES a structured website. And there is no hierarchy of pages in a site which just has all the pages coming off the main domain.

      Design your site for a Google crawl and a manual inspection. That's what i always try and aim for and it always helps me.

      Try it for yourself and you will see the same results - I'm 99.99% sure of this.

  • Wonder wheel and related searches option is a neat way to grab rankings in Google. I have seen people go on and on about back links but it is the on-site which also matters a lot. I got rankings for my writing blog > writeawriting.com blog without any aggressive back linking in the initial moths and that was the impetus to get going

      First off great post AffiliateJ, this is what I was looking for as i've been doing things a different way. My next site will be taking a similar approach to this.

      I have a couple of small questions and I hope I didn't miss them mentioned earlier.

      The OP mentions that he is keeping a list while promoting a product.

      1 - I assume this product is a Clickbank product? It sounds to me like he is promoting an eBook although I might be wrong.
      2 - It sounds like the niche is quite specific. If the OP is keeping a list of interested parties, what type of information will he send them? From what I can read, with the niche being specific, there may not be enough Clickbank products that would relate that the OP could promote in his list? So where does he go afterwords?

      As for the product launches, you really have to keep your ear to the ground in your niche. As lot of times, just sign up for the newsletters and look them over once in a while.

      Also, once you make a few sales for a product, contact the vendor and ask them to keep you updated with other product launches.

      There are also the popular forums around where you can meet product vendors (who launch multiple products across many niches). You can stay on top of most launches this way.

    • This is both a call to action and a challenge. I will bookmark this as well. As I'm a techophobe I will come back and ask as questions arise.
      Research is what always seems to trip me up. I really like the idea of looking at product launches. But I am torn between my passion and the idea of a 'generic' product. That's not a very good description but what I'm asking is what is at least one good way to find a product that sells and would you say that triumps your interests.
      I not really clear in my description but what I really need to find is a good product that fills a need and make sales on that exchange. Research and I tend to get off track doing it. Also I only need a small success to build confidence.
      Reading this back is making me confused as I don't have the words for my question.
      I knew about wonder wheels but never looked it as a LSI tool. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Great Post AffiliateJ! I have one quick (probably stupid ;-) ) question. I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about doing when saying to submit the xml site map to Google. Am I reading too much into this? Is it you just generate the XML from either google's tool or a plugin and then submit that page for the sitemap to google? or is there more involved? My gut feeling is I'm trying to make this too complicated so just wanted to ask if its just the simple,normal submission or is it a more involved process?

    • I can answer this.

      All you do is install the "Google XML Sitemaps" plugin in wordpress. After you install it you just go into the settings and click "Build". It'll say you havent done this before, so you need to do it.

      Now everytime you make a new post I'm pretty sure it rebuilds it and sends it off to google, bing, ask and yahoo (if it's configured). You can also change some advanced settings and stuff, but leaving it default is fine.

      It's basically a set it and forget it type plugin. This is probably the most simple thing on your entire blog lol. Installing the blog through fantasico/softaculous is more complicated

  • There is still competition, which looks like:

    4.9 million broad match (approx).
    840,000 phrase match (approx).

    These were figures I posted in this thread. But I did get in there early, and with a keyword domain.

    If you can get a few (and I mean a few) backlinks with the keyword in it, to the keyword domain, with a silo structured site and you're posting regular fresh content then Google loves you.

    You'll be rewarded with high SE placements. I know this for sure because I've done it on multiple sites. Other sites with thousands of blackhat backlinks come and go, but the above type of content sites will always rule - they are exactly what Google wantes people to put up.

    This is the type of site that is perfectly aligned with Google's own business model so it will always do well.

    It just takes a little effort to get it off the ground, but once you do one, you'll roll them out like no tomorrow.
