Should I make my site a blog or static html...also....1 site or many?

I've decided to work on a single site for awhile and make it a focus. I'm wondering whether I'm better off making it a blog or a regular static site. I'm not very skilled with static sites, and I'm a little more comfortable with the idea of working on a blog (not to mention I have a Firepow membership), but what will work out better over the long-term? Does it really matter?

Over the long-term I think that a website will work out better. You could have a lot of blogs pointing to your website later on. But why not start with a blog(and then point it to your website when it is ready) if you feel more comfortable with blogs?

Wow, I am amazed that everyone has suggested a static site.

Keep up with the times people.

    - A wordpress blog will outrank a static site with the same content every time.
    - Blogs are 10 times more efficient when posting content.
    - 1000's of plugins to automate tasks and increase productivity.
    - Great internal linking structure.
    - Pinging search engines automatically.
    - web 2.0 style, community invlovement with comment discussion.
    - Easy RSS subscription to keep your followers informed about every new post.

I could keep going with the advantages of a Wordpress Blog but i think you get the picture.

By far the best platform for an affiliate product review site. After you have done a review and submitted your post, other users can use the comment section to add their own review. So they dont have to take just your word for it on a static site, they can have many rewiews. Obviously you can still dictate what comment reviews are approved.

Can also have a perfectly good static landing page on the homepage of your blog with a few clicks of the mouse.

Never use free blogging platforms like Blogger, they are still boss of your blog and content so they can ban and delete your blog at any stage.

Get your own domain, hosting and install wordpress to that.

Here is a good article from Jack Humphrey (IM Guru) that backs up my claims.

A blog does seem to rank better, but it sure is a lot easier to make changes to a regular website. At least for me.

I have serveral of both. It's a pain for me to edit wordpress templates, where as with Dreamweaver I find it very easy to change anything.

I do have several blogs linnking to my main website.

Guess it depends on what you are trying to do.

I think we are in the age of the web application. Wordpress is certainly one of the leading web applications, and it makes a lot more sense to start with something that already has a lot of bells and whistles.

      Hi Saran

What purpose is your site for? Is it an 'adsense site', a site for affiliate marketing - is it going to be your main 'money site? These are all important questions in order to give you the most appropriate answer!

If you want a site that is dynamic and you will need to keep it updated - do as Bob suggested - a wordpress blog can be very powerful if used correctly.

If it's for affiliate marketing and very little work is to be done on it then use a static site.

If it's to be your main money site - do both and adopt a good linking strategy.

There are many more things to suggest but it's a bit difficult if we don't know what the main purpose is.

      Good luck

      Peter

For many a CMS like WordPress may have a longer learning curve to tweak the theme to get the look you want. But there are so many WordPress themes out there that you should be able to find something you like.

If you plan on adding a lot of content or pages (which you really need to do anyway) then it is worth the time and effort to learn. A properly configured and utilized WordPress blog can bring in traffic much quicker than the time it takes to promote a static site.

Static html sites are just for simple landing pages or sites that you will rarely if ever edit.

As opposed to a blog platform that is designed for frequent updating/posting.

Start with Wordpress.com and build a free blog to get skilled with the system.

Then host your own blog eventually, and you can pay someone to install it (though it is easy enough to learn on your own)

Every time you update a static site you will probably have to learn HTML, or learn how to use a pricey piece of software such as Frontpage.

Static sites, while secure and easy to build, are not a good choice for modern content driven websites.

      Just my 2

I have used several of each. I like to learn all of the web builder programs out there that are easy enough to follow but still give me enough to learn for my own hosted site. If you would like to try a blog and a quick website to see what others like better, I would use either Wordpress.com or blogger.com for your blog, then freewebs.com or weebly.com for your free website. Both of those services have an affordable upgrade option for when you are ready to pay for your hosting and make sure you don't lose customers over downtime.
Freewebs has paid advertising. Weebly doesn't. I like them both.

    Hey Saran ...

I see lots of people thinking this way:
    • Blog
    • Static Site
Why not create what you want with wordpress, that is what I have
been doing now for years and it rocks. Wordpress can very easily
create just about anything you want these days.

Heck I even do basic sales pages with wordpress.

Do a google search for "affiliate payload" and you will find my
wordpress based "sales page" ranked number one.

I like to use wordpress for the power, clean code, ability to
update my site anywhere, plugins and more.

    Good luck ...

Seems like some argument on this topic.

    The power of static site:
    1. If you rely heavily on SEO to drive traffic, you can easily build a SEO SILO friendly site. SEO SILO allows you to rank very high on targeted and related theme keywords with minimum back links!

    2. XSitePro provides all the necessary tools to build SEO friendly site, you just need to plan your strategy properly. Wordpress blog requires you to do some settings and optimization before it became "SEO On page Friendly".

    The power of Blog:
    1. You can easily setup tons of blog network with all keywords focused and automatic generate unique contents for your site.

    2. Blog is "SEO Off page" friendly in nature, many sites will link to it and Google seems to love them in some ways...

You should combine the best of both world:
    1. Setup SEO SILO friendly site.
    2. Build depth back links to all deep pages.
    3. Add 1 or 2 blogs on your site that build unique content and back links on autopilot - using Articlemarketingautomation and SyndicateKahuna.
    4. Modify all your post to include special keywords and link back to your static site, all pages. Your internal linking structure is important and will help you build your "Website Profile" on Google index.

You can easily out rank many sites with proper structure and auto content.

This strategy only good if you want to dominate many keywords and build a bigger, fat content rich site to promote affiliate products...
