WP Bounce/Page View Question

I am working with a site that is wordpress and it is basically a daily diary and health blog. It gets 3-6 posts a week. It is centered around one health issue and posts are related.

It was a static site and when it was first migrated over to wordpress aver a month ago it had about 4 page vies per unique. Then it started moving up to 6-7 over 2 weeks. Now it is back around 4 page views per unique visitor.

The question I have is there any advice anyone can give to move page views back up?

I was thinking that a plugin such as related posts may help but I would love to hear from any WP pros out there.

Do you use category, recent posts, popular posts, related posts and other similar widgets?

That's the only thing I could think of to improve your page views.

Couldn't you use your analytics package to determine exactly why the page views are down?

Aggregate stats like average page views aren't really very helpful for optimizing your site or user experience, as it's not an actionable metric.

Perhaps start by looking at your most popular landing pages with the bounce rate segmented by traffic source and keyword. That should shed some light on things.

Also, unique doesn't necessarily mean new does it, just that the visitor was cookied? Recurring visitors may well have a higher bounce rate and spend less time on site as they just come to read your new stuff and then leave, so it's not necessarily bad, depending on your site's purpose.

I would drill down into the analytics and understand the root cause of what's going on before breaking out the WP trinkets.

The only thing not being used right now is related posts but will be giving that a try.

Yes have been studying analytics and you have a good point due to the nature of the blog we do have visitors returning often. So thanks for pointing that out as a cause for driving pageviews per visitor down. Visitors are targeted/projected to be up about 40% this month over last but pageviews are only up around 10% compared to last month.

This has been done manually and is quite effective.

      Any other ideas?
