So I Probably Just Lost My Facebook Account ... LOL

I got a message that I got a Facebook message and try to log in to read it and I get this:

Your Facebook acct has been accessed from someone we don't recognize. Please follow these steps to verify you own the account

So Step 1 is a simple captcha
Step 2 shows some "friend's" photo and gives you about 5 names to choose from, plus an "I don't know" option.

You are only allowed two "I don't knows"

Needless to say, I don't know most of the "friends" I have on Facebook so I used up my 2 in the first 2 photos.

Then you get to #3 photo and you have to name them or ... just go away. That's the end of the line.

Glad I haven't been relying on Facebook for anything. lol.
#account #facebook #lol #lost

Ha! I think that's true of most facebookers nowadays. I don't know half the weirdos on my friend list. If that's their criteria, we'll all get booted eventually!

Yeah .... my family members are the only ones I know except for a few others.

Funny thing is ... I normally get nothing but spam messages except the ones from my family but this message was an offer for a domain that I own.

Figures ... the first time I get a real message from someone wanting to buy something, Facebook locks me out.

That is the most ridiculous verification process I've ever heard for two reasons:

    1) Many people don't even use their real photo on Facebook and photos change all the time
    2) They allow anyone to request to be your friend without stipulating that you have to actually know the person

I know ... it's absurd. I thought they were going to ask me real questions about my account that I would know ... but no one will pass this test.

I guessed well enough to get back in though.
How on earth did you guess without missing two? They are just names that I don't even remember how they got to be a friend to start with? lol. I don't ask people to be my friend, but I usually accept friend requests.

I don't think Facebook even believes that anymore. Don't they allow you to have up to 5000 friends? Who legitimately has 5000 friends?

If they want users to uphold a particular standard, they should be explicit about that, instead of cutting someone off with no warning.

FB is peaking / or has already ... its scrambling to hold the market ...

21 Jul 2010 ... As of this morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people ...

Wait, what do you mean by "peaking" and "hold the market"? Are you saying that they're losing their market share because people are joining other social networking sites?

          Look at it like this

If you have a city .. and there are 100k houses ... what is the most number of TV ariels you could sell ...

FB claims 500 million active users ..

          Wikipedia
The world population is the population of humans on the planet Earth. In 2009, the United Nations estimated the population to reach 7,000,000,000 in 2011;[1] current estimates by the United States Census Bureau put the population at 6,863,000,000.[2]

          ok so

FB now has 1/14 of the worlds population using it

          here is another article

29 Jul 2010 ... The personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published online in a downloadable file ...

thats 1/5 of the total collective ...

FB is scambling to hold onto its market ... this growth is not sustainable and will as in all market

          grow - plateau - decline

FB is somewhere in this cycle

Oh, you mean the market is saturated. Got it. But I don't see how decline is inevitable; after all, most of the world drinks coca-cola, and that saturation leads to more sales, not less. Maybe FB won't get new users, but can give richer content to it's existing users? Or am I missing something?

I actually know all 400 friends on my account.
Well you get a gold star then!!! Aren't we popular!! Seriously, I agree about the misuse of the word friend...I think we need a neologism, here, something specific to Facebook...fbriend? Nah, doesn't roll off the tongue...

Guess you didn't read my post. I had about 100 or so friends. Facebook allows 5,000. No one knows 5,000 people by sight ... no one. Then why allow it if they're going to verify that you know everyone. And businesses with thousands of "friends" .... No, they don't know them. They are not real friends. Why would I accept friend requests? I do it here too. Seems the friendly thing to do. Never know who could become a friend.

The verification is a real risk, particularly for offliners who are developing sign ups for businesses. Especially if you set them up as "intelligent clients" so they can update their customers directly, without your involvement. Then they cannot get in. They have paid you money and / or invested time in their fb pages / campaigns.
Need to make sure the fall back question and answers are well logged and not changed.

5000 friends? I had one and he died!

I actually know all 400 friends on my account. I do not accept friend requests from those I do not know except in rare cases where we agree on a mutual friend timeline and they want to friend me. When that happens, I do actually get to know them as well as one can on the net. Calling them 'friend' is a bit presumptuous though. More like acquaintances.

They should have an acquaintance section. Lol. (and maybe a 'Sort of Like' button, as well. LMAO! Not to mention a 'I don't give a rats ear' button )

And I suppose you know what every one of your friends' pets look like? Or their houses? Or their cars? Or what they looked like in high school? Or in grade school? Or whatever random image of the day they decided to use as a photo?

Or, if you do know all of those things, do you know which of your friends got a new pet today and started using it as their profile picture? Or a new car? Or a new boat? Or a new house? Or a new book? Or a new collectible? Or maybe they painted something or bought a painting? Or their kids gave them a drawing. Or they found a drawing they did when they were a kid.

Or, what happens if it's October and people are using picts of themselves in Halloween costumes?

It's not like your profile picture is like a driver's license photo that only gets changed every few years. Some people change their profile pictures on a regular basis.

Having to play "guess your friends or lose your account and, oh yeah, two strikes and you're out" is a stupid system. Maybe it'll reduce spammers, but it would also get rid of a lot of legitimate people.

Exactly ... I've been checking out some of the photos of people and there are clip art type avatars, dogs, cats, famous celebrities, you name it. I even came across one "friend" that I was supposed to verify who I guess didn't put a photo on his page so there was no photo on the verification page ... but I was supposed to know who it was. lol. Ridiculous.

LOL, thanks for the warning on that! I would likely go down like the Titanic.

I have friends posting dogs and aliens as their avatars, I have people added just to be farmville neighbors and they have names that are asian chinese symbols or something.

Nearly a thousand people in my account.

Maybe they should do a phone verification instead?

I would be so ticked off too to get locked out of my Farmville account as a result.

And you know - this is evil but I've already figured out the solution. Log in through someone elses account who you are friends with on a second computer, and go view your friends. lol

Not evil at all. Especially as there was no harm no foul in play. Wass all due to some 'anonymous' query.

Well, I was thinking of something "evil" but won't reveal it here - as I'm sure some will figure it out.

How hard is it for them to say "We now need members to verify their accounts via phone. If you change your number, you will need to change it immediately in your Facebook account in case we need to verify a second time"

            ????????

This way they could easily ask for re-verification every 6 months or something.

Yesterday I got a google map for a website, and google wanted to verify the number and business was being listed by the business owner so they called the number and gave a pin. I'm sure FB can figure this out instead of this picture and name thing.

But I thought of this: They let you take the verification over, so I will take it over and have Google running in another tab and just Google NAME Facebook and take a look at their pages. Facebook lets you look at profile pages ... I can see their name and photo, so maybe I can just match them up.

If worse comes to worse, I'll just create a new one. My kids leave me messages on Facebook and that is what I use it for mostly. They also post new photos for me to look at. Next time ... no friends except the kids and a few people I know here.

    -friends
-people I knew a long time ago (high school etc) who found me via Facebook, but have had zero contact with me for years
-friends of fellow musicians, for some reason musicians network on Facebook a lot more than others in my profile
    -some work-related acquaintances

It is a crazy system if that's the only way they have of verifying your account. What's wrong with the old 'email me a new password' system?

I recently did a friend cull on FB so I do now know all my friends, I was fed up of reading banal updates from people I didn't even know about what they had for breakfast this morning.

I lost the password, so to get it, I had to respond to verification questions that I could not even answer, like what is the first phone number I ever had in my entire life (my current number that I’ve had for 20 + years didn’t work, and no idea on any other than that, and never even used that for any password, security or other question in my life). So said goodbye to that account.

I mean who makes these questions and processes up? Seriously?

I invite people on my one of my lists to connect with me on FB. I use a canned message:

    Hi -

I am excited that you signed up for the Gratitude Quote of the Day. I invite you to add me as a friend and connect with me on a more personal level! Drop me a line to say hi on my profile!

    Be Well.

    Paul.

This actually works out well. I send a Friend Request to people as they sign up. Last night, I received an 'error' message saying that I have too many friend requests outstanding and that I could not send any more requests until some time period.

I will fail the "Match the Avatar with the Person You Don't Really Know" game!

You are a BAD PERSON for abusing the loving, intimate, warm Facebook family in this way. Don't you know we're all best friends on Facebook? And now, you've ruined that with your disingenuous friend requests.

Stay away from Facebook? Don't use it for business? Kind of crazy, don't you think. They allow you to make business pages, they sell Facebook Ads, they compete with Google for ad revenue.

The days of Facebook being for college kids to connect are long over.

If you are thinking of using your facebook for business, watch out.
if you are a small person, do not use your personal account for
any type of business promotion. Completely against TOS. I
had created a certain "personal" account to promote a website.
Silly me, never read anything. I got followers and was flying high.
Facebook suspended that account and sent me the TOS. No
          personal accounts for business.

So, create a fan page or something similar like a group or something.

I don't use facebook anymore except for personal stuff. I am loving
twitter. I plan to revisit FB for business when I get the chance.

Thanks for the heads up Suzanne. My niece was chiding me about 3 years ago because I wasn't on Facebook. Every once in awhile I think about it, and if I do, it will be only a small friends list like yours.

Why is it that when companies get large, they all need a headbutt removal tool? Sounds like that could be a good tool for someone to actually invent.

Well, I did the Google images thing and finally got all the questions right. I identified all 7 people that they wanted me to identify.

HOWEVER: I am on dialup and when I was done answering all the questions ....

    get this

    drumroll please

It said I answered them too slow.

LOL. I just made a new Facebook acct and I have only my children on it now as friends.

Glad I haven't been relying on Facebook for anything. lol.

The way around this is to open facebook on a 2nd computer and do a search for each person it asks you about. i had this happen to me and thats what we did to overcome the i dont know them

I have around ~700 friends and I know them all.. Am I the only person who knows all my 'friends' on my friend list?

Sure not going to add a stranger so they can see all my personal info.

Plus, the only time I've ever had to do the verification process is if someone logged in from an unknown location and I actually confirmed that I didn't know the location...

You didn't have the chance to say "This location is okay" or w/e the option is?

Spammers aside, this is a less than optimal validation process. If they are phishing for spammers there are better ways. I have a SMALL list. Just a scratch over 100 which is limited mostly to people I have met in the flesh. A very small number of people I've never met, but have had significant online interaction with are on the list too, but I know what the all look like from their RL photos. I keep my profile pretty tuightly personal and don't use it for marketing. I use pages for marketing.

Thing is, there are times when I could get screwed on this validation process. It happened to me once so far and the first pic was of a flower, the second was a cartoon, and I lucked out because number three was my Mom (Mom always has my back)!

Facebook has grown so much they feel they can delete accounts huh? If Facebook was meant for Just Friends to Associate...Why have Facebook Fanpages? Makes now sense...It's Called Social NETWORKING...which involves meeting new people.

  • Needless to say, when I got handed this test, I passed with flying colours "oh yeaa"

Then again that's what happens when you've gone to University and 400-500 of them are uni students you know. Other's are old friends from back home and family, and a small portion are those who I added when I was doing Network Marketing.
