What do Women Browse/Surf online?

Just wondering, from a marketers perspective women are an excellent target market for e-commerce.

Therefore, I would like to know what women search for online, where they surf, what they buy, basically what and where do they go when they are online?

Any suggestions...

Thanks

As a woman (LOL) I can honestly tell you that most women will search for:

    makeup tutorials
    weight loss tips
    relationship advice

Those are the biggest categories that I know of. Hope that helps!

Anti-aging skin creams. The women at my office were buying this stuff online. Seems like a popular product. Skin whiteners are big in some countries too.

According to a survey in one of my wife's "woman's magazines", a surprising number of women search for, and watch, porn. Now that they no longer have to venture into seedy shops in bad neighborhoods or risk embarrassment by receiving their stuff in the mail, a lot of women are proving to be just as horny as men.

Add sex toys (already mentioned), potions and lotions, fantasy gear (mink whip, anyone?) and there are many opportunities.

Looking at my wife's history, she likes coupon sites, new food products, restaurant reviews, travel destination sites and more.

All the above mentioned categories, then deals on those. Sites like slickdeals.net, etc. are great. I surf there all the time. Definitely work the "good deal" angle. Add the keyword "discount," etc. when possible.

When my (ex-)girlfriend used to come over, she used to spend a lot of time on my laptop looking at crafty stuff. Stencils, sticky letters, sequins, etc and templates for various things. She bought a lot of that type of stuff to make cards and gifts for birthdays and other occasions.

Crafts of all types are very popular among women I think. I don't know if any of you guys followed Dan Raine's "15k Challenge" a few years back, but his niche/market of choice was crafts, and very successful it was for him too (despite him failing the challenge only marginally).

Depends on what age group.....and a whole lot of other things (single/married/divorced, anorexic/overweight, happy/depressed, rich/poor). Unfortunately you can't generalize 50% of the population. But the previous posters have given you a good start....now really focus in on something more specific...find a market and then determine what type of women is going to be your target audience.

Oh and watch Mel Gibson in "What Women Want"

Women like to look up stuff for kids and husband. Women like to look stuff for a single ladies night out.

Women look up ways to lose weight for being too fat. Women also like to look up ways to gain weight for being skinny.

Women look up ways to eat healthy. Women also look up coupons to save on fast food places.

Women look up ways to cheat. Women also look up relationship books to be faithful.

Women look up ways to go back to school and research full-time. Women look up ways to start a business full-time.

Women look up make-up products. Women look up ways to be naturally beautiful.

Women look up porn. Women look up how porn can be degrading.

Women look up ways to dye their hair black. Women look up ways to dye their hair blonde.

    Wow, women are confusing!

I hate shopping so I am not a good female in that regard! If I look online to buy something it's usually to learn about left handed guitars as I am a lefty guitar player. I like to see what's on sale. I have bought Birkenstock sandals from eBay as they were a good price. I've bought books from amazon.ca. That's about it for this girl!

A little late but if you want a statistically proven answer from a proper research company have a look at the Comscore report published about 6 weeks ago. It's a serious look at how men v women on the web but has loads of good stuff for marketers.
Mashable also have a few highlights at How Women Use the Web [REPORT] but if you can, read the full report it's worth it (if dull).

Had to join in on this post. For your research purposes, lol. I am 28 years old, a wife and mom of 2. I currently work outside the home. I'm usually online anywhere from 11pm-5am. I search for tons of things online. I buy tons of things from walmart.com and amazon.com. I love checking out wso's when I have a little cash to blow. Mainly cause I'm a reading junkie. I love reading and researching ways to make cash while staying at home. I'm a fan of free ebooks, yahoo answers, facebook, wahm.com, avon, hotwheel cars, anything car related that I can buy for my 2 year old son. I love goal setting books, organization books. Fan of netflix, gamehouse. Soon to look into buying my groceries online. Have checked out some porn, but pointless to buy when there are websites like redtube offering it for free. I have way too many interests, this list will be continued when I'm not half awake, lol.

I'm a typical woman and I love jewelry, pretty things for the home, clothes' accessories, bird's food (it's much cheaper over the web and save me the trouble to go out and buy it) and books on subjects like "The Tracker" by Tom Brown (I don't have time to travel and track, so I like to fantasize about it in my backyard).
By the way I buy most of my jewelry over ebay and most of my books over amazon.com
    Hope that helps

Indeed women are notorious for their spending habits :p ... just look at the members' list of buyer-addicts anonymous; the numbers speak for themselves. That's why women are such an important target audience for sellers. However cyber-culture has dissolved the boundaries and more and more men are being infected with the buyer-holics' virus.

I've been watching my other female friends on Facebook/Twitter and the most common things I see them talking about right now are shoes and purses, in that order! Pretty much everything men do. I don't like buying clothes, shoes, or makeup, I only buy jewelry from independent artists (and never wear it), and I'm not particularly interested in dating, weight loss, or any of the other stereotypical stuff.

Looking through my email account receipts, I've bought this stuff online: books, tea, travel tickets, domain names, a lot of ebooks and products, video game credits, website templates, software, birthday gifts like crochet patterns and paintings, and CDs.

You need a better market idea than "women". If I went to sell stuff to "men", I'd utterly fail, because there are guys who like video gaming and sports, and guys who like fashion and books. Same goes for girls.

Try adding a few adjectives and you can better nail it down.

The Z's have it, because I totally agree with Zabrina. Most of what I look for can be used by either gender. Weather. News. Deals, both local and online. Business and marketing. New and unusual web apps and sites. Freeware. Local events and day trips. Timesaving tips. Home improvement and DIY. Add-ons for games I enjoy (not that I'm playing a lot of those lately). I don't browse for perfume/makeup/clothes/shoes/jewelry, but if I need something, I'll search for it ... just like my ex-husband did.

I'd rather be boiled in oil than get involved in some kind of fluffy scrapbooking crafty thing.

And I rather resent the implication that all women can be stuffed into one marketing box.

So, Zabrina, if I proposed to you with an expensive, diamond-studded designer ring, after singling you out from a million others' on a popular dating website, due to your bum looking mighty phat in those awesome emo/skater jeans you're wearing ... you wouldn't find that flattering enough say yes, and marry me?

The real question is what don't women shop for. Reality is women love to shop whether that be online or off. Head out to your local mall and find a bench in a prim location and just site there and watch for a few hours. You will see which stores attract more women then others. However you will also notice that all of the stores in that location where hit by women at one time or another in your hour watching session.

So the real question isnt what that shop for but what they don't. By determining this first you can then start to narrow down the results by what they shop for the most.
