HELP - Need A Free Word Software Like Microsoft Word

I just went to start writing my first eBook and to my shock i found i only had two on my computer, Notepad and Wordpad. I tried writing in them both and i hate it, it cannot be done!

I need a GOOD and FREE wordprocessing program similar to Microsoft Word. Does anyone know of any?

Thanks in advance.

Steven

I use open office. It has all the features of Microsoft Office and it is free. www: OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite.

Not quite as good as Microsoft but pretty damn close for most stuff.
You're right, it's not quite as good... it's better. Plus it's free.

Steven, I've used OO a lot. It's usual extension is *.odt for the WP files. If you need a *.doc file, so you can share your files with others using MSWord, you can use OO's "save as" function and save it as a *.doc file.

I find that OO's "export as PDF" feature to do a very good job turning your WP files into PDFs.

You can do the same thing with OO's spread sheet utility and save you files as *.xls files if you need to.

Yep, Open Office is your best bet when comparing to Office.

If you find later you want something less robust just to kick things around .. bump up your notepad or wordpad to something like editplus or ultraedit.. they however are not free but worth every penny.

I agree. Open Office is the best. Only feature it is missing from word that I wish they would add is the capability to summarize text.

For making e-books, OpenOffice is the way to go. It has everything you need to layout your e-book and export to a PDF.

Similiar enough to MS Word that the transition is pretty easy.
