Keyword efficiency index, as a concept, appeals to and interests people who imagine that the "number of competing sites" is important to how well they can potentially rank for a specified keyword. This isn't actually true at all, of course, because we all have more chance of ranking against 12,000,000 competitors if the listings on the first page are PR-0/PR-1 sites without too many backlinks than we do of ranking against 12,000 competitors of whom the first page or two are age-old, high-PR authority sites with huge numbers of well established, context-relevant backlinks from other high-PR sites. So - call me a skepchick, but I think "keyword efficiency index" is a bit of a waste of time, because it fails to take adequately into account the fact that your competition's quality is actually far more relevant than its quantity.
Alexa gave a great explanation of KEI and I would just like to ad the formula for its calculation = searches per month^2/Search results.

Yes, it really is a poor statistic to base too much emphasis on but I generally include it in my keyword market research reports because when you have over 400 keywords it allows 1 more way to sort them such as

        1. Average searches per month - highest first
        2. Search engine results - lowest first
        3. KEI - Higher first
        4. InTitle {keyword usage} vs Total search results - Lowest first

This way you can decrease the number of keywords to further breakdown by more accurate competition factors.

I think you have to make 5 posts before it appears ... in which case, "coming up very soon"!

I don't think so. Keyword density is exactly what it says on the tin i.e. the frequency of the keyword expressed as a percentage of the whole text.

Now the other term I am less familiar with, but I believe it is used by certain marketing tools to indicate the profitability of the keyword. This takes into account a number of factors.
