Well i bought a domain the other day targeting a keyword with had 12000 exact searches a month. A week later I'm rank 1 feeling chuffed with myself i went to look again and now it seems the keyword is only getting 800 exact searches a month .

Now i checked the keyword with MS and Google keyword before i bought the domain.

My question is what do you use to check the searches for the keyword?

Thanks,
Rich

The searches with vary from month to month anyways. Maybe you should try building on it to keep it ranked up there

Thanks for your reply I was just a bit worried as it dropped from 12000 to 800 i was rather excited about it when it was 12000 lol.

Seems like quite a drop for it to change in just 1 month.

Did you happen to look at the search trend - could it be a seasonal thing?

It seems constant through tout the year however it now says 12000 again :S. Its not like I'm getting visitors either even being in the top 3.

How many hits a day did you expect to get from those numbers and how far off are you from what you thought you would get?

I use the google key word tool...it the numbers dipped then went back up in the same day, maybe there was just a burp somewhere...as far as visitors...there is more than just numbers that go into picking a key word...

You are ranked top 3, but is it a buying key word? I.e. something people are going surch one for info ot to make a purchase.

Plus how long have you had the top 3 position? You may get more visits as time goes on...

That is a huge drop. But to rank on 1st within a week with such a high search keywords deserved a compliment!

Most....ok all of the keyword tools are more or less a guess anyway. 12000 to 800 is a big drop but you may check it later and find it back up there...so don't check!

Seriously, pick your keyword based on your original research and move on.

I've had lots of keyword myths smashed in the last few days at a live event...

Mike, this is why I asked the question that I asked.

I wanted to see if the OP had unrealistic expectations. Most do.
As you stated, keyword tools are just an "educated guess" to begin with.

Then there are the other factors that very few people ever learn about User Search Data. How the users (search numbers) actually start to break down.

Too many newbies, (some veterans too) see these numbers and automatically start thinking about having that amount show up at their site.

Most people do not stop to consider that they are NOT going to get that many people, and they don't have any idea how many, or what percentage of those searchers they MIGHT get.

Newbies are shocked when I tell them that if they are on the front page of Google and are not in the top three spots, they can expect somewhere between 2% and 5% of the monthly results.

If you are in the top three spots, then you are going to get roughly 10% to 20%.

How many people start off their keyword research with these figures in mind?

      Unfortunately, not many.

Then they end up here asking where all of their visitors are.

It is best to do a test run using paid per click prior to committing a ton of time and money to a keyword. Often time the numbers given by google is hyped up so they can sell adwords add. By doing a test campaign you can test how many impressions you will be getting.

        1. pick keyword to test
        2. pick a top ranking site , since this site will have top quality score with google
        3. start an adword campaign with a budget of like $5 for that site and set for 24 hrs. set it for a little above min bid.
        4. check results.

keep in mind that your ad with come up at the bottom of the paid ad selection so little ctr, but impression count will give u a good idea if the figure given by google is accurate or not. Hope this helps.

This is an awesome advice and very important to have in mind, even if you are in the 1 spot you will never be getting more than 25% of the total searches.

I am pretty sure that your keyword is a seasonal keyword, as they have said in the threat before keyword tools are giving you just an estimate, to help you to see if it is seasonal or not use google trends.

And dont feel discourage just because less people is searching for your term,
start working on your conversions, don't give up.

The only way to know for sure is to run an adwords campaign on it and see how many impressions you get. Like Mike said, most of the keyword tools are just making a guess and sometimes it is inaccurate.

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned, make sure you're not signed into your Google account while you conduct the search, it's possible you aren't ranked there but Google has placed your site there due to saved data.
