Referrers from sites I'm not linked from...

My stats show a lot of referrers from sites that don't actually link to me. I've never seen this happen in the many years I've been doing this up until the last few months.

Is this some new kind of spam designed to get me to click through to their sites... or am I just a new kind of crazy? (Probably the latter)

    Yep, it's spam designed for one or two things:

    1. It gets you to visit their site looking for their link. There are some really advanced versions of this tactic that include showing a dynamic link to your site when you click the URL in your stats... making you think the link is real (but of course, its not)

    2. A lot of sites have publicly available statistics - by spamming fake links, these sites get backlink through the public stats back to their site.

    However, it's not new.
