What Would Be A Good Freebie Product For A Motel Opt-In?

Hi all!

I may be working with a motel as my first offline client, a motel in sunny and beautiful Tasman New Zealand. One of the things I'm looking at is list-building on their site. I've been chewing over what might be a good freebie to encourage opting in. For example:
  • A checklist of things when looking for holiday accommodation.
  • Things to look out for when looking for holiday accommodation.
  • A list of (local and international) websites to check for accommodation reviews.
  • A detailed guide to the best travel spots in the area.
  • A detailed guide to local restaurants and places of convenience like libraries, hospitals etc.
  • A guide to local customs, "Should I tip?" kind of thing, like "7 Kiwi Customs You Had Better Get Right!"
  • Lesser-known places that are relatively quiet even in the peak of summer. "7 Amazing Tasman Destinations Travel Agents Won't Tell You About"
Well just writing out this post has come with a few more than I'd had a few minutes ago. Can you join the fun? What would be appealing to you as a pre-visitor to an outdoorsy/scenic/active area in a foreign country?

    Being a small business marketing Consultant I would suggest a few options:

    - A list of Coupon sites offering discounts at nearby Restaurants and Attractions. (has cash value in the mind of the consumer Worth $300 in savings)

    - "Kia Ora?" (look it up) A fun guide to Kiwi slang definitions. A must for NZ Travelers.

    - Scare them into opting-in : The 2010 Top 10 Scams and Crimes on International Travelers, travelling abroad.

    Discounts to local locations, restaurants, etc. would be appreciated by most.

    So the participating business could exchange "advertisements" with the hotel, or you could even make it a 3 way deal, where someone else gets involed. But someone needs to be giving something out for the hotel or pay them to give a way discount coupons.

    How about clean sheets?

    Oh wait, you mean something to give them before they check in. A detailed guide to the local area and discount coupons, especially if one of the coupons is for dollars off at the motel you represent, seems like a very viable idea.

    Team up with other local businesses and have them pay for part of the production cost and your motel could have the guide printed for free.

    Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

    I would give people a 10% or 20% discount on their first night of stay at that place. They would have to be able to download a coupon. The hotel owner would be able to track if it is working or not. And stay updated for future discounts.

      Thanks very much for the feedback. I don't seem to be able to "Thank" you yet - I guess due to insufficient posts - but I have checked out your sig links (and I'll come back to Thank you when able to!).

      Andrew, thanks for the clear, specific ideas. Safety is always on traveler's minds so that would be a real goodie and stands out as the easiest to get done initially.

      Kim, a discount coupon for the first night would also be a solid possibility. The easier it is to track results, the easier it is to for them to to see the benefits and for me to get paid. :-) The main problem is that a bit of a price war has been initiated by a large motel that happens to be right across the road, so maybe a free upgrade or something similar would be better.

      Any other thoughts would be welcome. These will apply to any/most offline businesses, so I hope others can benefit too.
