I'm really struggling. Need advice.

Hi guys,

I've hit a brick wall right now, and really struggling. Let me explain.

I've not written articles in a good year. Today I jumped back into article writing. For about 6 hours I have been totally stuck. I've sat on various article sites looking up top authors, trying to get a drift for their writing style, but every time I come back to my own task I just go blank.

I know what I want to write about, but I've totally forgot how to write a good article.

I refuse to outsource. I've done this in the past whilst at university, and I will do it again.

Anyone got any good advice for me?

Thanks

James

Edit: please seem my response which contains the article I was writing when asking the question: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post2508581

I would say ignore other peoples writing style - find your own style, be you 100%. Write the way you speak, make it natural, it sounds like you're trying to force it.

Work out what it is you want to write about, go over in your head what you want to say, key points, and start brain storming ideas - idea's for the title would be a good start.

Once you have the title, you should be able to start writing the content, it's far easier once you have the title already.

Try to write about things you have an interest in too - it's harder to write about stuff which makes you want to fall asleep!!

    Cheers

If you know what you want to say you have half the battle accomplished. If it's a problem of getting it out of your head onto paper (per-say) then perhaps you could use dragon naturally speaking or record it and then transcribe it.

If you don't know what to say first then just blurt down your main points, there should be at least 3.

Introduce them briefly in the opening paragraph. That will be about 100 words

Each of your next 3 paragraphs will be an elaborate version of each key point you introduced. about 100 words each paragraph

Then your closing paragraph will be a summary of your key points and what they can do now with all the information you just gave them. another 100 words.

If you have more than 3 key points that introduce them all in the first paragraph and make a paragraph for each point with more detail about it... just shorten them up a bit so you still end up with 500+ words.

Just start writing points down and then rearrange and unjuggle it later as you reread what you are trying to say... the flow will start coming to you and before you know your article will actually make sense.

Go back to what you're taught in university - outline. I write constantly, just about, and I still find outlining to be an extremely useful tool.

      A. Premise
      B. Point One
      C. Point Two
      D. Point Three
      E. Restate B,C,D and show how they supported A.

There is the basic idea. Instead of concentrating on writing an ARTICLE, worry about writing your premise only. Then worry about doing just point one. Etc. Before you know it, you have the entire article written but you did in bite-sized pieces.

Once you get accustomed to writing again, you probably won't need to do this every time but it's a good way to get you over the initial hump.

I would recommend taking a break. Don't try to force it. Do what will completely take your mind OFF article writing and then go back later. If it's not going to happen don't force it. Go out and relax and get your mind off it, I love to exercise in these situations and riding my bike through Seattle trails is the perfect way to Detox from IM Overdosing. I'd recommend something similar.

      Really?
Are you done writing the article yet? j/k

My best writing comes from with in. It comes from things that mean a lot to me.
If you can look at a subject from that angle you will never hit a road block.
Look at it from the readers point of view and give them what they want/need to read.

Don't get trapped in the his/her style thing. Get stuck in the moment!

Road blocks come from not being sure about what you're trying to convey
      in you writings.

      Hope that Helps,
      Have a Great Day!

I'm at about 600 words and have been refining the article and re-reading over and over again. I'd say I'm 60% of the way there.

I do tend to feel I hit roadblocks when I am writing about something outside of my knowledge area. The article I am writing now is outside my knowledge area, and is probably not as good as it could be if I'd written an article on "anxiety" (because I suffer with it). But, I've put in some research and feel more comfortable at the moment.

It's 2am in the UK, so I at least want to get a 1st draft done before I sleep.

Seems like you are on your way, that's awesome!

I try not to write if I'm stuck. I talk it out. Just say it out loud.

Yes, you can use Dragon Naturally Speaking as others suggested above, and/or can outline as you go as Tina suggests... I just tell it to the wall like I'm talking to my best friend about it. Then putting it into electronic form is not a first-run, it's a revision.

    Welcome back. ;-)

      Start with a single paragraph.

Find a *good* article, on ezinearticles or elsewhere, take the first paragraph, and re-write it.

Don't look at it in terms of re-writing the whole article. Begin and end with a single paragraph, just rewriting what you read.

I've found that sometimes it's simply being 'overwhelmed'. Starting by writing just one paragraph can help get you back into 'writing' mode.

        Hi,

I don't know if I'm late in writing to you, but at times i'd get stuck myself too (so you're not alone, friend! ^_^)

Here are some of the things that I'd do when I'm stuck:
        • Relax first (don't think about it at all)
        • Go for a run (that's where my ideas come from)
        • Cool down
        • Write notes from your thoughts
        • done!
Alternatively, you may want to check out how others write, then think about what they write, in your own words.

Watch some youtube videos related to your topic.

        Have fun! ^_^

        Hope it helps.

When i get stuck when writing articles I just get a way for a little bit and come back fresh. Another thing you might want to do is look at some of your past good articles that you have written. They may spark some inspiration of what you are capable of doing.

There's really good advice here, and if you're also not afraid of a WSO, someone here has one that shows you how to write 15 minute articles. He has a template as well as a video - it's about 40 minutes long and a good 10 minutes of it is advertising or ... bonus information on how to be and affiliate, but his process is really good to look at. Systemizing he calls it.

Something I do, that's free, is spend time at my local bookstore and/or library looking at content related to what I'm writing about. I then put interesting concepts into my own words. :-)

Just write as if you are talking to your best friend. No B.S., straight to the point conversational. It would also help if you developed a specific structure to your articles.

      Here's mine for example:

First 50-150 words - Start by asking some poignant questions pertaining to the topic of the article, I focus on problems my prospect has. Build up the pain these problems are causing and then identify with them.

Next 100-200(or more) words - Show them how to solve 1 part of their overall problem and establish credibility.

Resource box - have a very strong call to action indicating that you have the ultimate solution to their problems you identified.

From here it's really just a matter of plug & play if you've done your research.

I would only write articles say 40-50 or so and have them backlink to your own blog. Then concentrate on writing blog posts for your own self hosted Wordpress blog build your business not someone elses. That way you control everything your content etc... Its not in someone elses hands.

As far as the writing style goes like previously stated write like you are talking to your friends its your knowledge your readers are after. And if you run into writers block research other blogs, or Websites in a niche that you are interested in this will give you some good ideas for a subject that you can write about.

    Good luck!

Hi James, I can see that you have had heaps of really positive response from the others but I just wanted to chip in and point out that even in your original question you were writing. As I write this I am thinking about you and what I would say to you if you were in my house having a cuppa and we were just chatting. Unless I am working on really formal assignments that is how I write most things.

One other point I would make is that it is important to get something written down - I remember reading somewhere that the blank page (or screeen of course) can become a huge block for writers - so if that happens to you try typing anything - a sentence from a book or article that you have read, or just what is in your head at that point in time. Once you have something on paper you can always edit it so just get something down and you will come right.

    All the best

I'm going to post what I have written. I did PM Kim from this thread and asked for a critasism, but I feel losing one article (which is probably poor anyway) is better than losing hours of work in the future and will provide valuable help for others reading this. So here goes.

Be as harsh as you like :p

Watch Satellite TV Online – Scam or Not?

You may have heard about a recent trend that allows you to watch TV online, and if so have probably questioned whether or not it's a scam. Before I attempt to answer that important question let me first quickly explain what online satellite TV is.

Online satellite TV allows you to watch satellite TV channels on your computer without the need for a satellite dish and expensive monthly fees. Many companies have released software that allows you to watch hundreds of popular satellite TV channels from around the world, in a variety of different cultures and languages.

Although this may sound like something from a futuristic space age sci-fi movie, it is entirely possible. Infact, in remote parts of the world where satellite TV is not an option, online satellite TV makes a great, if not better, alternative and is ideal for those that like to travel.

To skip back to the question the answer is yes ... and no. Whilst there are a number of legitimate online satellite TV providers it's important to understand that malicious companies do exist.

Malicious companies falsely advertise their products and services by hiding hidden clauses within their small print. Without knowing how to avoid these companies there are a number of pitfalls the unsuspecting victim could fall into.

Here are my top 3 tips to help avoid scams when looking for an online satellite TV provider.

    1) Recursive billing

Recursive billing, or re-billing, is where a company charges you weekly, monthly or yearly fees for the use of their product or services. This usually happens automatically and is charged to your credit card.

The best way to avoid this is to read the small print. If the company fails to advertise a regular billing cycle in the advertisement, but mentions it in the small print it's probably best you steer clear.

    2) Refund policy

Always ensure a refund policy is available. Any legitimate and customer focused company will offer a refund, within a given period, if the user is unhappy with the product or service.

Always read the small print to be sure.

    3) Spyware, malware and viruses

Keep your anti virus software up to date and running at all times. Malicious companies have been known to attach spyware, malware and viruses to their software.

    The good news …

The good news is there are some great online satellite TV companies that are out to provide a quality service and are not concerned with cleaning out your bank account or installing malware on your computer.

A number of benefits to watching satellite TV from your computer are:

    • No set-up up costs or expensive monthly billing
    • Watch TV from anywhere in the world at any location with Internet access
    • No satellite dish or lengthy cables running through your house
    • Watch international TV channels at no extra cost

A simpler strategy would be to purchase PLR rights to multiples of articles in your area of focus and edit/modify them to personalize them to your particular needs. Writing an article from scratch is time consuming and research intensive, IMHO.

Yeah, if you didn't write for some time, it might be a difficult, as creativity needs to be stimulated all the time.

Here is the simple strategy for that - find 3 - 5 articles related to your topic and create a 3 tips style article. For example, 3 Ways How to BLANK.

Learn the tip from each article and create your own with your own words. This will be the fastest way to get back your creativity.

I hop it helps a bit,

    1. Make bullet points.
    2. Write like you are writing a forum post. Be casual
3.Write about something you are interested in or know stuff about.

Fill in the bullet point paragraphs with more info.

The most viewed articles are the ones with bullet points such as

To begin with I think your writing is very good. I totally have no idea what your intentions are with this article which would make a difference as well. I just think you need some restructuring. That article to me is really two articles in one. One would be about what online satellite is about and the benefits of it. The other would be the looking out for the scams when choosing a provider. I have sent you a PM with detailed restructuring, a bit more punch and some persuasion added for this particular article.

    Hi James,

When I get stuck I use a little technique to help me out.

Usually I try to write articles that solve problems. What I do is visit forums and see if i can find a similar thread related to my topic. I then paste people's answers into a note pad documentation. Once i have found enough to work from I read through them and this usually gives me enough inspiration to come up with fresh ideas and you can also reproduce the data you have collected but in your own words as long as it is of good quality.

I look around article directories for ideas as well as using good old Google.

    Hope this helps

    James,

Your writing looks very good to me.

To your original question.... When you feel stuck or blank it usually reflects one thing, you have not absorbed enough content on the subject.

Go back to your research and read fast. Read some articles on EZA, Wikipedia, a site or two advertising the product, and check Google News for info. Once you have spent 30 minutes to an hour reading it becomes much easier to write.

The second thing, even if you feel it sucks, keep writing. On about the second or third article it will smooth out and start feeling more natural. You can go back later and fix those first articles.
