The Death of Blogs

The only one I use is stumbleupon but I do have accounts on the others.

I do believe social networking is important, tools exist to integrate these with your blog and it's a good idea to do so.

However I think their advice is flawed.

I doubt they will be pulling the plug on their blog.

Does stumbleupon have RSS feeds of your activities? What about Digg?

Since each feed item can become its own "page" on the site, each feed item can be rated, commented on etc...

Hmmm... maybe making the "river of feeds" site like Digg where users can rate the feed items... so not just news or blog entries, but also links, forum posts, twitter notes, flickr images, youtube videos, etc...

Yeah - "killing" your blog is not a good idea...

Any of you ever use blog RSS with your mailing list system?

It's hardly a great article when it starts by telling people to shut down their blogs. That's pretty bad advice. Maybe we should take down our optin forms and sales pages, too. After all, sales letters are so 1925.

This is good proof that just because something is published in a major magazine, it's not necessarily worth paying attention to.

Don't blogs serve as the perfect integration for all the above?...lol..

It's ironic that you praise this waste of words and then go on to look for an all in one solution for social networking... why don't you grab a blog and connect all your social network profile's to it?....O wait.. blogs are waning , eh?....err... we must find a substitute for blogs that can do exactly the same as a blog.. hmmm

Ever try FriendFeed?

I think that blogging as a strategy for content generation is fantastic... only thing better is user generated content when you have a big site.

What I took away from the article is that its harder to get "home runs" and really high rankings for major keywords.. and this will only increase.

I am interested in the next generation (where blogs were 5 or 6 years ago) of traffic generation through social networking. For example, I see some people on facebook and twitter with hundreds or thousands of friends. Thats not as direct as an email list, but its powerful... especially if they are from a niche.

Considering that everything is going to RSS, it seems that an RSS based strategy of some type is a safe bet - then most major strategies (including blogs) can be incorporated. If you can incorporate them into your blog, then yeah... its the same thing.

But designing a good system is also about thinking of tomorrow and where things are going. A bit of thought will make sure that your system is even more powerful when the next big thing happens.

I am also interested in how to make it super easy for people. I have some relatively advanced development skills... and lots of WF folks have moderate skills... but most people and IM only have the basics.

So - how do you create a robust, complex and evolving system super easy AND super effective? I think thats part of the question.
