For those of you plugging away at one particular niche, do you read magazines and other publications within your niche?

Sometimes yes. They often have advertisements for certain products. If someone is going to shell out crazy money to advertise in a magazine... it should be a product that is selling well. Perhaps it is on amazon or there is simethign just like it available to resell. Perhaps you can make a variation of it.

Good ideas come from those magazines.

    Just to get ideas.

Honestly, there's just so much to read out there, and don't have time for it.

For my main niche these days - which isn't even a niche, it's a market - I read magazines, and have been doing that for over twenty years. This is the kind of market that there'd be no use in going into unless you expected massive traffic, but I did expect that, because 1) it's where my, um, expertise lies, and 2) I'm good at SEO and better than most of the competition, and there's a LOT of keywords to rank for. And the "expertise" comes from being crazy about this stuff since I was about twelve. Had I not loved the stuff, I would NEVER have gone into it. I could make better money doing more of the other stuff I do, but I'm really past the "uh, you gotta maximize profits bro" phase at this stage, to be honest... Now I don't have to post article after article, day after day, month after month about something I hate writing about.

There aren't magazines for some of my niches, but there are books. Yes, I always do, regularly and enthusiastically.

when I can...Over my 5 years in my niche I have been a subscriber to a few magazines in the niche. I have also read many books in the niche. However, over time my magazine reading has tapered off significantly.

I don't read magazines in my niche, so to speak. At least as far
as marketing it on the internet. But yes, I read mags for ideas on
      articles.

I do read a general IM magazine that is top notch for warriors.

No, it's not because that I don't want to, it's because that a lot of niches which I focus are micro niches. There just aren't magzines for them.

I have to agree with shermancox. The amount of time spent reading learn, when you are starting out, tapers off as your networking and "real-life" experience become your main sources of learning.
I do, however, still subscribe to my two favorite magazines in my niche, and I carry them with me. There are always random moments, waiting in line, etc., when I can find one or two valuable tips or ideas to try or expand upon.

I use/have used magazines in various ways

    To brainstorm niche and subniches

To assess the profitability of a niche

To see what people are buying online within the niche

    For article ideas

Yes, I read magazines from time to time - their a good source of information and ideas.

And since some of the stuff on my site is based off history, I buy history books from time to time off of amazon.

I do for a couple of reasons...

A - Content Ideas... find out what trends are hot and jump on them
B - Check out the adverts
C - Find and connect with experts (*By far the most important) - Most of these magazines use freelance writers or non-exclusive (meaning they can write for whoever they wish), except of course for the featured editorials (with some exceptions)

Anyway they usually have the experts' name and contact, be it their website, blog, twitter etc. So all you have to do is find these experts and get in touch with them, and voila you have superb quality content and products that no affiliate or niche marketer could even come close to

Yes, standard consulting procedure. Keeps your updated, and small stories from magazines works very well as tiny icebreakers.
