More Google Algorithm Tweaks

For those who use SEO to promote your sites, you may have noticed the new change. I believe it only came into effect yesterday.

This one means that Google will now display more than one result from one domain on its search results.

For SEO guys it means paying more attention to individual pages, while it can also mean that less spaces are available for competition.

Do you think this is a good thing?

They have always displayed more than result (if deemed relevant) from one domain. Nothing new here.

Not new as far as you've described it. Been seeing this for a long time. Sure you have this one right? Sure you're an SEO expert, there?

Yep. They announced it on their blog a couple of days back and
trust me, the response has not been great. I personally don't like it
    as a regular Googler.

Ok, I see what you mean now. It was just recently on Google's blog.

I take what I said back.

However, even though it seems like Google's saying this is new, it isn't. I have seen this for well over a year when searching for news sites, for example.

But what Google is saying is, they are now going to be doing this on a much larger scale for more sites, I think.

All they did was enhance sitelinks. There were no BIG algorithmic changes that would impact rankings. I would however, pay close attention to your onsite optimization, because this could be great if you're top dawg in your niche.

Type in tyrehouse to google and you will see one of our customers and if you click on the plus you will see a number of their other pages so this is not that new.

Sorry I guess I didn't explain myself very clearly, thanks for the clarification Abhi1.

I don' think it is very old news, they say they launched the initiative on August 20, 2010

I can't experience any change in google algorithm. They claim they have changed stuff that flavor silo site and that is not true. If algorithm is to be changed, google would have to destruct the whole search engine and rebuild it.

this is basically a change that would help bigger companies and/or websites. It's not new like they say, they just made it official now.

The first time I noticed this was with apple.com: If you search for imac in google you will get the first 3-4 results just apple.com pages.

So your little imacplanet.com fansite or something like that won't rank #1 anymore for the term "imac", because google thinks that the searcher will be better off reading from the official source.

Google now pushes major brand names. However, Bing is not stuck on stupid so you should optimize for BING, and Bingo! I have a position seven on BING and that same keyword is doing terrible on google. Time to reward those you send you traffic and not Big G anymore.

      Bing is laughable..

It's sent one visitor to my blog in all its time of existence.

In regards to this change it doesn't mean they show more results.

It means that if someone searches say "Big floppy disks" and the only supplier of big floppy disks was a site called. wesellstupidoldoutdatedbutevenbiggerfloppydisks.co m

Then Google will show more results from that one site (than it used to) because it is most relevant to the searchers query.

Bing is only laughable to IMers, who like keeping all their eggs in one basket...

If you are not optimized for Bing, then it is not going to send you any traffic at all... A self-fulfilling prophesy...

To optimize for Bing, you must pay attention to on-site content... To optimize for Google, you must pay attention to off-site links...

        Two worlds -- two audiences...

Just because you would never use Bing, does not mean that your customers will never use Bing...

If your marketplace is entrenched in Bing, you are shooting yourself in the foot by ignoring them...

However, if you only cater to IMers, then you have little to worry about... The only IMers using Bing are those who have noticed as many of us have that Bing often produces better results than Google...

I am not suggesting anyone should optimize for Bing, to the exclusion of Google, but it is fool-hearty to think that none of your prospects are using Bing...

More so, it is kind of silly to believe that Bing is going to send you any traffic at all, if you have never attempted to rank on Bing...

According to the graph at ( StatCounter Global Stats - Browser, OS, Search Engine including Mobile Market Share ), Google still holds on average between 80-85% of search engine market share -- yes, substantial.... Yahoo and Bing tend to hold 7-8% each of marketshare...

With hundreds of billions of searches a day, none of these numbers are really that small... Unless you believe in keeping all of your eggs in one basket -- the one search engine that could change its algorithms in a day and put you out of business in a day -- then you should try to think beyond the Google Box...

          1. I don't count this as an algorithm change. It's more a small change in the results page display. And yes, I do think it will tend to favor bigger sites and increase emphasis on inner pages.

          2. I've been seeing a small, but growing, contribution from Bing on some of my sites. The sites and pages involved lead me to think Bill is right:

To optimize for Bing, you must pay attention to on-site content... To optimize for Google, you must pay attention to off-site links...
If this is so, why not shoot for both? Take care of your on-site business and pursue your off-site business?

This has been happening for years... The only thing that has changed is that now you have a website in the search results worthy of such recognition...
