Do you know why people unsubscribing to your list?

When you're slaving away on your computer, putting every effort into building your list...it demotivates you instantly when you see people unsubscribe.

Especially when the unsubscribe number escalates with every broadcast.

After studying through my email marketing in various niches, here's what I found:

- if you don't email your list regularly, some will unsubscribe when they see your email. They don't know you and don't know when they subscribed to you list.

- if you email too regularly, many will unsubscribe because they're sick of seeing you in their inboxes

- if the majority of your content is promoting product after product, many people will unsubscribe

Now pay attention to this....

Even if you email 1 - 3 times a week, with good content and only promote occassionally, you will still get unsubscribes.

There have been many times where I have sent good, valuable emails to my list but still get unsubscribes while receiving a lot of thank you emails.

By the way, this does not apply to the internet marketing niche only. Although in other niches, the unsubscribes are lower.

So my take is...don't worry about the unsubscribes unless there is a spike.

Do you have the same results with your mailings?

It happens, dont worry about it - its just a fact of life. People subscribe for various reasons, they may lose interest, change their mind, get bored,,, whatever it is.

My mailing list has over 10,000 people that have unsubscribed.

Just keep moving forward, and keep getting new people to sign up.

    Well,

The responses from the people fall into the following categories:

The "No Longer Need It" or "Don't Read It" variety

The "Stop Emailing Me" "Where did you get my email address variety"
lol...I feel like saying...you agreed to it when you downloaded my ebook...Folks even double opt in...

The "I don't agree with you" variety

In my niche I have a list of 5K. Every-time I email my list I get a little jump in unsubscribes. Interestingly enough, I also get a jump in subscribes. I think this is due to the fact that folks forward the email to other people, but I am not sure what is going on there.

I simply look at the number of subscribes versus unsubscribes and as long as I am growing, I don't worry about it too much...

I normally mail to my list 1-2 times a week...

Yes. That's the approach I take as well. That's why one should never stop building their list.

I heard Howie Scwartz say one time, "buy something or get off my list."

Pretty simple really. Give content and know you are adding value and the rest just works itself out.

If your unsubscribers exceed your subscribers - maybe your message isn't clear.

With online marketing, email marketing or any type of marketing, you simply cannot please everyone all the time. Don't worry about people unsubscribing, worry about what you can control which is how many people you can get to subscribe.

There will always be people unsubscribing no matter how perfect your system is.

I agree that there's no perfect system.

But I am interested with dannyadams' comment on not delivering a report/video download when the subscribes signs up but to follow up with an ecourse scheduled over a period of time instead.

It certainly makes sense that it will stop people from unsubscribing after receiving the download. Has anyone tested this?

that seems like a good idea...It would also get people into the habit of getting emails from you...

I think I am gonna test that to see how it works in my niche...

After thinking about it, a quicker way of delivering your squeeze page bribe is to deliver the report and mention that part 2 can be downloaded in the next 2 weeks.

Part 2 can be a collection of your past articles and tips you broadcasted to your list.

          More things to test :-)

    My subscribers un-subscribe because:

    - solved the problem due to they subscribed in the first place

    - no longer interested in the subject

    - don't have money to buy anything

My take on un-subscribes - I don't want to be that car salesman who tries to sell a Toyota to a BMW fan. If they don't like my style and what I offer I don't want them on my list. Focus on those who like you and are eager to buy from you. It all weeds itself out.

Well...lots of people unsubscribe from lists quickly because of serial offer pumping, serial ad swap pumping, etc. and they are completely sick of promotional garbage clogging their inbox.

When it is obvious that I am going to get pounded with one email after another with nothing but sales pitches or ad swap emails to get me to give up my email address to another serial offer promoter, I unsubscribe in a heartbeat.

I do occasionally buy offers from people who consistently deliver email content that is useful because they have earned my respect and I trust their opinion. I appreciate the value of the information they send by email and when they do promote an offer their opinion of the product is vastly more credible than some yahoo that spams my inbox with one sales pitch after another starting with their first email.

I would suggest reexamining the quality of the content you are emailing.

Agree. As long as your delivering useful, relevant, and actionable content then those seem to be the main reasons.

List attrition is very real and it happens to all lists...

You simply need to continue growing faster than other people are leaving...

When I had a mailing list, I sent an unsub message asking them why they were leaving the list... Most ignored, but the answers I did get were very enlightening, helping me to product a better product in the long run...

It is a fact of life. Whatever you do to your subscribers, there will be some unsubscribes. If you promote a product, there will be unsubscribes, if you don't promote a product and just sending pure free valuable content, people will get bored and will ask you to stop emailing them.

Then deep inside, you don't know how to place yourself, whether to send them an email regularly, or just 1-2 times a week. Whatever it is, you will still see some unsubscribes, and that's something that you can't avoid.

Just move on and keep getting new people to your list. If you get 5 unsubscribes in every 10 people that you get, that's 50% unsubscribe rate, which is too high, but you should still be thankful, because the 5 remaining subscribers left in your list, are those who can be very responsive subscribers and are really interested in your contents.

Just remember, stars are fewer than soils. keep on looking up for the few stars instead of looking down to millions of soils.

      Hope this helps.
