Any Wordpress 3.0 experts? Help please...

I've got a few questions about wordpress 3.0.

Here's what I'm trying to do...

I'm trying to build out a series of websites for a client that each target a long tail keyword. My understanding with Wordpress 3.0 is that you can create new websites at the push of the button that all utilize the same theme and plugins as your 1st wp install.

Is that correct?

And then, does it copy pages & the content on the pages, too?

I'd like to be able to create a new site at the push of the button, modify/optimize the content on the homepage for the particular long tail keyword, update a unique logo and be done.

Does that make sense?

Is this possible with wp 3.0?

Actually, it is possible, even with a single install to achieve most of what you want, if you know how to
      1. ftp all the wordpress files (plugins/themes, too) to a webserver;
      2. upload a database into mysql, and
      3. edit the two important records in it that dictate the blog url.

It can be done as fast as the dns server takes to find the domain!

But I'm not aware of any tools that do that specifically, esp. on a unique domain, though wpmu can duplicate a lot of this on its own. It doesn't however do unique domain names, ie. mydomain.com, out of the box.

Also, if you are using 20 or 30 wordpress installs, there will be a performance hit on your server. WP is a resource hog.

This method isn't unique to WP3.0 at all, so it may not be what you're looking for. It does, however, work effectively, apart from the last part of your request. It will allow you to scale your installs to a great level, but it's not automatic.

yes, from WordPress 3.0 and up WordPress MU capabilities have been integrated into the standard WP core so you can have multiple blogs from a single installation.

and then what you can do is create the content for one of the blogs and use the export tool to export the posts, pages, categories and tags from the one blog into an XML file and download that file to your computer and then use the import tool to import this file into your various other blogs which will populate your blogs with all the content from the first blog that you can then modify using "edit post" or "edit page"

I hope this makes sense to you...I've yet to discover a quicker way to accomplish what you want but if I do I'll let you know.

Nope. He is talking about WP 3.x.x MS = MultiSite

(as Karen said: there is no more MU - project discontinued...)

Karen's advice will work well. I've only had issues using export and import in WP with large websites. The maximum size is currently 8mb. If you go over that, you'll have to split the XML file and that does take some techie skills. Database table backups and restores from Cpanel work better, but that requires another set of skills.

I use GoDaddy and can install WP in about 30 seconds or use fantastico, installing many manually can take ages.

That's nice... just doesn't have anything to do with the OP.
Did you, actually, read what was the question in the OP?

Yes, it is correct. With a small addition: the plugins can be activated network-wide, although the settings won't be "transferred" from the main site to the other sites.

No, but Karen's solution should work.
