Choosing a Niche and Keyword Research

Choosing a niche is something that has bogged me down for a long time. I have interests but none that I have an in depth knowledge of. Are there any video tutorials that anyone knows of that go through this process in depth? The same applies to keyword research and which tools to use to discover keywords and long-tail keywords.
Any advice much appreciated!

I can agree, my way of doing things is. Look for niches, best 1 out of 5, buy domain, read and work.

Trends/Keyword tool should be the two you will ever need IMO.

I think MicroNicheFinder.com is a pretty good tool.

It is really useful for finding little uncovered niches and enables you to do dig deep.

Other people use Market Samurai as well.

But you do need to know that you have good understanding of keyword research before investing in both otherwise you will just feel overwhelmed. There are plenty of posts on this forum that can help you get that skill.

Choosing a niche is easy. They are everywhere, just look around you. Look at the stuff you have in your home. Things that you use everyday. Hobbies that you are interested in. What your family and friends are interested in. Go to Amazon and check out their magazines. If there is a magazine for it then people are interested in it. Also check out ebay and clickbank. What's hot?

Keyword research is the next step to see if any of these niches will make you money. I use Market Samurai to do keyword research as it has all of the relevant information at the fingertips to make an informed decision. You can get a free trial of Market Samurai. If you get MS take some time to learn how to use it correctly. This investment of time will pay you back many times over in the future.

If you have to do this manually the use the google keyword tool for search numbers and google itself for competition(put the keyword phrase in "") to get phrase match. I usually go for keyword phrases that get at least 80 searches a day and have less than 50000 competing pages. Check to see if there are any adwords ads on the right side of the google search page. If there are this indicates that there is money in the niche as people don't usually pay for ads if they aren't making any money.

Other factors regarding the top ten competitors in the niche are if the sites are optimized properly. Do they have the keyword phrase in the title, url, header and description? How many backlinks do they have? Do they have PR? How old is the site? etc.

I choose a niche, by simply going to amazon as product niches are far easier, i then simply rewrite the product description and copy and paste the technical details, by writing say 2 to 300 words of unique content with some dupe content, you website will still rank as content is just one of the factors of a website ranking.

If you have interests that you don't have indepth knowledge of...

Why not expand those interests and use it as motivation to learn more about the subject? As you learn build a web site about it. Use you willingness to learn as your unique angle/selling point. Spin it around from a negative to a positve.

A lot of product creation is based in researching subjects you don't know about. If you at least are interested in them then learning about them will be so much easier!

There are plenty of ways out there to choose your niche. I don't agree that you need a tool though. Buy a tool when your making some money from your efforts as it will help but I don't think its a real necessity. I like to have a look at various markets as a whole, ill look through each one of the competitors in the market then ill use this strategy with Alexa of all things to find opportunities How To Use Alexa To Find Profitable Keywords | sambakker.com

Once I have done that I find a domain that fits into the niche and the keyword i'm targetting e.g. fastweightlossfactor.com and ill market that for the specific keyword I found the opportunity in Alexa with (As long as the term was bringing in enough traffic when I checked it in Google keyword tools)

It's not a hard process just get out and do it. The best way to learn is with action in this business.

niche: don't go too deep, you want to be able to sell various products to your prospects. So, look for markets, then find very specific target audiences with very specific needs (at this time). That'll usually give you the keywords.

example: say you're targeting "teeth whitening". Ok, they buy your teeth whitening products. Now what? Now you have to start guessing what else they might want. (ok, it's probably a fair guess that they're concerned with their looks, but do you know anything else about them? Not really). So, rather difficult to recommend another targeted product.

Take on the other hand the market of "bodybuilding". Dig deep until you find the niche of those who want to get killer biceps. It's probably a good guess that once they have those killer biceps, they want killer triceps too. And then killer abs. and they need (maybe) supplements for this. And instructional videos. And weights for home. And weights when traveling, and ... It's much easier to make other recommendations as you have a clearer picture of who they are and what they want.

ok, both examples are a bit artificial, but I hope you get the point.

once in that narrow niche (inside the market), find the most relevant keywords, quickly test them and go after the ones that actually make money.
Ideally do the quick test in adwords, so you don't waste your time SEOing anything for keywords that don't attract buyers.
If you don't have the cash and/or get overwhelmed by adwords, as then at least use OCI (adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention) as an indicator.

    good luck

    "Just do it ..."

MAke sure there's money to be made (ie. lots of affiliate programs, other people doing it and lots of different priced programs -- no one rich selling $7 ebook -- well not many).

Then do it ... it really is the only way to get experience and REALLY find out what works. No book, course or guide can teach you that real world experience and 'in the trenches' experience.

What has worked very well for us is actually ignoring keyword in the first stage of analysis and then working our way back there during the validation and actual marketing stages.

      Here's what I mean...

      1. When we are either looking for niches or have one in mind, I always start with looking at what is selling first -- if infoproducts is your end goal, then you want to look at clickbank, amazon, commission junction, seminar portals, etc... to see IF and WHAT is selling in that field.

      2. After getting a good handle on what is selling...we then reverse engineer the ultimate challenge or desire that is behind the consumer demand for that information product...what questions are they looking to find the answer to? What outcome are they seeking?

      3. Now you have a target niche, armed with what it is they want - keyword research is the next phase where you have one main objective 1) Finding the right combination of cost-effective keywords that lead you to the best Return on Investment you can get -- in other words, which keywords are the "buyer" keywords...that process is part art and part science (process of testing).

By taking this money-based approach it means we avoid giong down avenues where the keyword opportunity looks good, but where there may not be sufficient proof that products are selling.

I really agree with sceptre, If you want to good ranking on search engines then you should have niche keyword. You can find better keywords for your website via use Google Adwards.

Niche keywords and original content is very most important for getting good backlinks and ranking on search engine.

You don't have to be an expert to promote a product, like many others once you find a affiliate program do your homework and get to know the Niche. Best place to go to brainstorming for more subniche ideas is that amazon and browse through their category section. Also look closely to your resume, previous work experience, websites that you visit regularly. Best of Luck!
