Questions for experienced domain sellers...

Hey!

I recently purchased a couple of domain names, and I'd like to sell them, where do you recommend I sell these to maximise profits?

Also is there any time constraints websites put in between purchasing and selling a domain - for example do you recommend waiting a certain time period?

    Without a doubt, the best place to sell domain names is Sedo.com.

    If I buy a domain for the purposes of flipping, I will immediately put it up on Sedo -- no delays. It can sometimes take a little while to get an offer on your domain, so get it up there right away.

    Depending on your registrar, you may have an issue transferring it to another registrar within a certain time period after registration, but you can almost always push the domain to another account for the same registrar.

    I will echo exactly what Rob said. Get the domains on Sedo.com right away. List them with a "buy now" price for the best results. Another site you may consider is Afternic.com. There is a small membership fee but I have sold many domains there.

      Do you do anything to promote the domains you list there? I've had a few listed on there for several months and haven't gotten so much as a nibble.

        No, nothing extra is done to promote. I do have the "this domain may be for sale, call 800-555-1212" message on the parked domains though, and inquiries are handled by them.

    Thanks guys, I listed them on Sedo, but am torn by Afternic, but not sure about the $19.95 premium plan, especially as it also doubles the commission you have to pay.

      While it's true you pay double, you get what you pay for. You have staff working on your behalf to sell your domain. They receive phone calls from interested prospects and close the sale for you. Your domain(s) are promoted at a variety of other marketplaces. If you don't want these extra benefits, you can stay with the basic service, whereby you wait for prospects to find your domain on the Afternic site.

    In my opinion, Flippa is much better suited for complete websites that are already generating revenue. Not so good for just domain names.

    If i wanted to build wordpress blogs on my hosting account and buy domains for them as well .. then sell the entire thing - lock stock n barrel - where ...Flippa?

    Whats the best type of hosting to have for this?

    How can the buyer take all the code/php/content etc ... and move it all easily onto their hosts server so I dont have to, and if they are newbs its drop dead easy?

    How long does it take for the domains to trx over and get the blog back up and rocking after the sale?

    -how old are they domains?
    -what niche(s) are they in?
    -are they 1, 2 or 3 word domains?
    -do they contain numbers?
    -are they ripe for mistypes (ex. 2 letters back to back like....Besttime.com or Gooddogs.com.....those are just examles...)


    My advice would be to get familiar with sites like Rick Latona's auction, or SimpleDomains.com.

    If you have good quality names you will get the highest prices from end-users and now "wholesale" from other domainers. This however requires work.

    The best advice any experienced domain investor can give someone new starting out is:
    a) specialize in a particular kind of domain
    b) get to know the big buyers in that market (domains are a very inefficient market where prices are set not so much by supply and demand but perception of value....the people with the biggest pockets therefore set the "prices" or value)
    c) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - don't rush out and buy domains just because "you" think it sounds nice. I have never bought a domain in my life (at least not one worth any money) where "I thought" it sounded good....you buy it because a)you've researched it and know there's market demand....
    e) become a regular of blogs of people like Ozdomainer, Rick's Blog, Elliot's Blog and Sahir's blog

    I have received an email through Sedo asking me how much I want for one of the domains, but to be honest i'd prefer to send it to auction since I have little experience (at this moment) of selling prices.
