Oh, you dirty little Warriors, take your mind out of the gutter...

...I mean since you created/worked with a membership site?

It's been a while since I've worked with membership sites, and I find myself needing to fast track one...

Come on Warriors, let me know!

  • Depends on what you need the membership site to do exactly - but my vote would be using wordpress to create it.

    Fast, easy, and very inexpensive.

    • You don't give much to go on...:p

Wordpress is a great starter--and Buddypress makes for an interactive community that different levels can be available by subscription. Joomla is another platform, and lends itself better to different levels of of paid membership and magazine/educational content.

If a forum is seen as part of the package, BP has bbPress built in--or Simpleress is a very nice plugin. One of the current issues with BP is the lack of free or cheap themes. Joomla takes a lot more experience and ability to deal with CSS and PHP design to make things look nice--but iJoomla (another developer) makes a number of very nice templates and modules that help get the job done and work with varied paid subscription. Membership can be expanded through the Community Builder applications.

The "top dog" if forum inclusion is part of the package it vBulletin. Version 4.x now includes blogs and publishing as part of its tricks. I am presently working to upgrade a 400K+ member site up from v3.8.x to take advantage of this. It all depends on what you are looking to accomplish

  • I have yet to create a membership website but I know they make great money. One of these days, I plan on making a membership website.

  • Jimmy D Brown has a rather interesting approach, he calls it a fixed term membership site. I like the idea because it's dead simple to execute: website, paypal and autoresponder series. That's it... simple. No need to be creating new content each month with this approach - quite liberating actually ;-)
