Is Using Rank Tracker in Market Samurai A Bad Idea?

Hi

I have Market Samurai, and most days I check my website rankings for the keywords I am targeting.

Then I read something about Google not liking this, so I had a look over at their guidelines and found this:

"Google's Terms of Service do not allow the sending of automated queries of any sort to our system without express permission in advance from Google. Sending automated queries absorbs resources and includes using any software (such as WebPosition Goldâ„¢) to send automated queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage ranks in Google search results for various queries."

Automated queries - Webmaster Tools Help

Does using this (or similar) software damage your rankings in any way?

Thanks

I doubt it will effect ranking otherwise you could simply do rank checker on your competition, just in the same way people thought you could build spammy links to competitor sites - but we know you can't do that.

Due to the way Google has now personalised what a user will see based on past browsing and history, what else do they expect?

You could use pagewash.com for anon browsing if you want to check your ranking from a neutral perspective.

    Great question,
I don't know how Google could actually penalize the website for this.

If that was the case, then a nefarious fellow could just repeatedly do this to a competitor's site and get them put in google jail.

Now, I have absolutely no idea if this damages your rankings at all. This is just my get feeling on this. And it is worth every cent of the paper it is written on.

Oops, this isn't paper, so it probably isn't worth anything afterall.

I have personally seen it hurt. I use rank checker from seobook.

I was at the same position for Google for months. (checking only manually)

Then, I started checking my rank with Rank Checker and every day I checked it my site went down a few notches and I ended up not ranking for keywords I used to rank for.

I stopped using the automated stuff.

I understand the theory that "well if that's true anyone can knock anybody out of position by doing that."

But, just telling you my (I know it's limited) experience.

You can adjust the number of treads and the time between tries to minimize this.

I have not seen it affect the rank of the site, but I have heard of people being locked out of using goolge search for a period of time by IP. I think is the way that Google can protect its resources of the automated queries come to fast.

I suspect the above example to be a perfect case study for false causality
