In need of Help for a great idea.

Hi everyone,

I could use some help here. I have had a major idea for a website. I have only mentioned it to a couple of experienced web dudes vaguely and they were completely blown away.

The problem is I don't know where to go from here. Who do I approach that will not steal it? Who could I trust to do the programming? How would I go about presenting my idea to someone that could help fund it and make it a reality?

Anyone been in the same boat?

Thanks

Have you figured out how much the site would cost to make? Is there a close to or similar functioning site you can probe into the source code on?

Also, while the site might be "cool" have you figured out how you are going to monetize on it? Does your future audience have money to spend? Will they spend it on your site?

No idea what it would cost it would need about 1/3 custom programming and the rest is already out there I believe.

This will be a social site similar to youtube or facebook but involves music. I would think it would be monetized by ads at a later date when it became popular. Similar to the big sites.

        Aha. Ok.

Well, there is nothing to stop anyone from mimicking or taking your idea once it it out there. I hate to say, even those you have talked to - if they have not signed some kind of disclosure agreement you are lost if they decide to talk.

To get funding, you are going to need to come up with a well written out business plan.

Think about shows like shark tank. You need to have some actual numbers to compare and convince someone your idea is worth the investment.

You'll want to prove there is a demand for what you are offering - meaning you may need to get it on the cheap into a beta phase and then go looking for some serious cash.

You could network with others ie: programmers, web designers, etc - who would become part of the whole package and might volunteer some time in exchange for a piece of the pie.

But I think the plan needs to be written out in great detail first before you can figure out what is really needed to proceed.

Unfortunately, ideas are everywhere - but there is no where to just submit an idea and be handed a check. It needs to be developed as much as possible. When you are truly ready for some money to come your way to help you get there, you'll have a much easier time finding it.

          Oh, forgot to add.

If you know what the domain name is or should be, just go buy it now if you have not already.

the best thing to do if you want a programmer is to outsource it...

there are many great programmers you can hire for real cheap...

if you go to odesk, getafreelancer, scriptlance, theres many more that do programming for real cheap

For what it's worth you could have them sign a non disclosure agreement...but not sure what u mean you don't know where to go from here? There is a vast difference between and Idea and an opportunity...if it is a unique idea or spin on an existing idea then at least buy the domain and get a simple page up for copyright issues and then go from there. Don't go around spouting your idea to idiots you do not know, or they will have a site up faster then you..

    Good luck

This is a VERY unique idea that I have researched and has not been done. I am being very carful about letting people know any of the major details.
Do you know of any good NDA's that will hold water if taken to task?

I use Outsource to Freelancers, IT Companies, Programmers, Web Designers from India, Russia, USA, and more. But there are others that are similar elance and gofreelance i think, I am old and stick to my ways.

If you have the necessary funding available, then outsourcing it to a team of developers and supervising all development is one place to start. Make sure they are bound by an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) with you before you proceed though.

    Cheers,

Where would I find a team of developers who are honest? Is there a directory that is available that rates teams of developers?

Some freelancing sites will let you find people who will bid to do work for you.

You'll be able to check their references and qualifications.

The freelancing sites (some) have a software that gets installed on your workers computer. This software allows you to spy on them doing the work for you.

Anyway, you will need to interview and scrutinize just like any employer would for a prospective employee.

I tried a few freelancer sites and I found elance.com to be the most reliable. Providers there charge a bit more than other sites but the quality service they provide is a lot better than other sites. With non-disclosure statement, you'll have no problem. As far as funding is concerned, you just have to keep searching until you find one I guess.

Hi, if you're that worried about others stealing the idea from you, consider this:

Does describing the purpose of your web site divulge the content?
    - What I mean by this is (for example a membership site that sells user-created t-shirts) to get a quote, you won't need to give away the secrets of the site, just say "I'd like a site that would allow it's members to sell things online" - then, once you have a quote you feel you could work with, start narrowing it down, and hopefully, by that time, you could have built up the trust with whoever is building the site.

I like the idea Global365 had about the non-disclosure agreement though. It's always worth considering something along those lines too.

Good luck with "whatever it is" - it sounds exciting!!

Yes, unfortunately describing it gives it away. I am now looking at different NDA's to present it.

Seems like it will be a big investment so you will need to do a little more deep-planning and just focus on moving forward. Only you know the end goal and if you can picture the end goal take step by step to reach it.
