Not a good morning...

Warriors,

Some blogger stole my article and is posting them on his website.

I found out because via an email from EA which will now, not approve my article even though my post date is about 2 weeks prior to his.

I sent him a message on his contact form demanding that he remove about five of my articles that he posted to his site and signed his name to with no links back to my site.

How can I protect myself against this so that this will not be an issue with EA in the future?

What is even worse is the fact that he stripped all of the article links out of it and Google has his copy listed in as the first organic result for the title as the keyword and my original at organic result number six.

AND he has a "Protected by Copyscape - Do Not Copy" Icon on his blog.

Here is my original posted on July 27th 2010

***Link Deleted***

Here is his stolen copy posted on August 6th 2010

***Link Deleted***

This absolutely blows!

Mark

Man that sucks - all that hard work to have it stolen.

I have a couple of suggestions:

    • In future you could post to EZA first before it is posted anywhere else - this may not be optimal for SEO etc. but would avoid this problem.

    Good luck!

Mark have you contacted EzineArticles and showed them your original post dated earlier than his?

This happened to me once but the person copied my article and submitted it to an article directory. I also had the same article on the same article directory - needless to say I contacted that article directory and asked them why they approved an article that was a word for word copy of one already listed.

They removed it and banned him. I also sent Ezine articles a link to my original article as I had submitted it to them also and same thing, they wouldn't approve it as they said I wasn't the original author and gave me the link to the other guys 'copied' article. When I showed them my original article and told them to look at the dates, they then approved my article.

Yes I sent them links to both articles highlighting the post dates.

Good for you.glad you took care of that. How do you avoid having this happen again? It is hard enough to get EA to get your article out there then to have someone steal your work? Wow

It has been my experience that you cannot trust EZA editors to use their brains, without encouragement from you for them to do so...

While the date is obvious to you, it is not obvious to them... Shoot, common sense is not even obvious to most EZA editors...

So, you should be very detailed when you show the EZA editors your proof of how "your content" is really "your content"...

p.s. Hey Chris... I still love ya!!! Except when your editors are boneheads...

Good for you, Mark! Usually just the threat of legal action is enough to get even the most thick-headed jackass to do your bidding, lol. He knows well enough that he was in the wrong to begin with, and is acknowledging it by pulling those articles from his site.

First, glad to hear he removed the articles.

That said, I would keep an eye on him - don't spend every waking moment stalking him, just poke around his site every so often.

Thank you for sharing this interesting case. I will sure remember it should this happen to me.

One very practical question and I hope you will find it appropriate...
I have noticed links in the article to Aweber, Getresponse, Godaddy etc.
Why aren't you using affiliate links there?
These services are paying affiliates well.

Good point. Because I wasn't thinking clearly when I wrote the article. I am in the process of applying to all of the affiliate programs so that I can replace these with affiliate links.

I forgot to add that my Ezine Articles account has been suspended because of this.

Does EA check the post dates of the articles? Mine was published a week before he copied it and his copy was dated a week after mine. Does EA check this or do they shoot first and ask questions later?

Congrats on getting it removed. In the future, you can always use TYNT to automatically create a link back to your blog whenever someone copies and pastes content directly from your blog or set-up a Google Alert for some of the unique content.

WayBackMachine (Internet Archive: Wayback Machine) is also a great tool for helping prove you were first.

Don't forget that web hosts will also work with you on getting the content removed. You can use Who-hosts.com to determine that easily as well.

Sorry for your experience but I am glad you got some good results. The next time this happens to me, however, I will START with filing the DMCA request and THEN the email to the website owner. I know our time is valuable and it makes no sense to start a battle that can be prevented in a more peaceful and quicker way.

Nevertheless, I think it is case by case and in this instance I personally would have been more aggressive. What you describe was not an innocent mistake. This person knew they were stealing your content and that it was illegal. They 1) stole multiple articles 2) removed your name 3) removed your links 4) although the CopyScape logo doesn't mean much anymore it does indicate they had a minimum understanding of copyright infringement.

After you get it straightened out with EA I would calculate all the time it took to get this all straightened out and send the person a bill.

I guess the case by case decisions depend on the articles also. If a person just quickly banged them out for the SEO and link benefits maybe they don't feel so strongly. I love writing but it does not come easily. On my main site I take a lot of time to be original, creative, motivational, and instructive. By the time I am done I have edited the content countless times to get it just right. When someone steals my content I feel violated just as if they stole a physical precious heirloom from my house.

OK - now I need a nap. Sorry for the rant everyone - maybe I am not having a good morning either.

This has actually turned into an interesting experience.

One thing I took away from this was quite discomforting...

Google outranked the original article with a copied one. Are they slipping?

      I mean seriously!

Why in the world would a copy outrank the original?

Apparently the copy had more backlinks to it...?

I am not too keen on the part of their algorithm that controls this aspect.

That seems very sloppy to me.

Google is not slipping... The people who have told you that the original copy of the article would always rank higher have been blowing smoke up your rear...

Google outranked the original article with a copied one.
This has been the case for years and years and years... Nothing new here...

You would think that the original copy would take precedent, but it never has... Despite all of the stories you have always heard pointing to the contrary viewpoint...

See my link below for the Duplicate Content Penalty Myth, and you will see video proof (through a link) that the original copy of the article has NEVER been given priority over the copy with the most link popularity or publisher with the most authority...

Noooo, not at all. This happens.

Bill is ("of course", "obviously", and so on) completely right about this, and others (many of them!) saying otherwise are wrong. The subsequent copy can and quite often will outrank the original. Not necessarily permanently.

Note that this doesn't detract from the principle that it's a good idea to publish your articles on your own site first, as explained in such detail in this fine thread. In the long run, that's still the right thing to do.

Don't worry about it. Just keep doing what you're doing, and aim at widespread syndication of your high-quality articles on high-quality/ranking sites after publishing them yourself, and you end up with the authority site.

I"m glad you got this sorted out.

I think I know what he did. I do something similar. I research my keywords, and look up eza articles that use the same keyword, then i respin those articles, usually rewriting them completely, using the basic outline, but he forgot the whole respin part of this process.

using someone elses writing as a jumping off part can help in the writing process, and your work is quality enough that someone sees the value of it. Hey, there's a compliment in here somewhere.

A number of sites (e.g. http://sfgate.com and http://nydailynews.com) have begun using Tynt.com's tracer technology to detect when you copy part of a web page so that they can track where that copied content is used. [https://chrome.google.com/extensions...mojicomlgmkam]

I have not tried it yet, but IMHO it might be useful.

I just visited the TYNT website, thanks to Alexa's link, and it looks interesting and useful from various angles. One of the more intriguing aspects is (to me) this:

"Each time a user pastes content from your website into an email, blog or website, we automatically add a URL link back to your site's original content. When someone clicks that URL, they are directed back to your site and see the original content. This drives incremental traffic to your site when your content is shared without your knowledge while maintaining a consistent user experience."

That is a direct quote from their website.

When I checked the email address I had submitted, I got a welcome letter, with appropriate information. So now I will try it out.

The same thing has happened to me on several occasions.
Ezinearticles doesn't even bother helping you in this case. I explain that my content is stolen and that i'm the original author but they will not accept my article because some punk decided to still my content and claim it as their own.

People like this ruin not only our marketing efforts but they're also deceiving readers looking for information.

Stealing is wrong my parents taught me this ever since i was in grade school why can't adults make a good example?

Just an interesting twist I've seen with this. The person stealing the content will post a fake date, earlier than the date of the original article. More work, but it can still be challenged.

I appreciate a lot of your simple straightforward practical information posts. (Is that really you in your avatar?)

As smart Alexa mentioned, that is good. That is the only way I do it.
