Affiliates: Chocolate Chip or Oatmeal Cookies? - Be Honest!

I was just wondering, what do you guys as affiliates prefer in the affiliate cookie?

1. Those that once someone clicks through the link that person becomes a permanent affiliate and no other affiliate link can override it?

2. Or those (like the CB hoplink) where the last affiliate link clicked gets credit for the sale?

I would definitely like to know your affiliate thoughts on this one.

I voted for #1 ... but I think both have their own reasons.

#2 makes more sense because it is the one that made the user buy ...
#1 is the first one to bring the user in, and could be that the user bookmarked the site and thought of coming back to it after reading a few reviews, when he reaches the #2's site and goes and buys . So technically, #1 deserved the sale.

Very Tricky ! But yes, #2 is what is used globally now. We used #1 when we launched our product in July last year, but all the JV's and affiliates DEMANDED that it be changed to #2, so based on what they asked for, we changed it to #2.

Nr 2. If you have someone on your list and convince them to buy a product would you want someone else to get the affiliate check when they didn't do anything but fail selling it the first time?

Yes I am using #2 as well and I will keep doing so.

But recently I have seen many affiliate programs running on number 1 so it has me puzzled.

    Anyone who would prefer #1?

There are pro's and con's to both, especially when you bring a launch into the picture.

If you're going with last referrer tracking (#2) then why would anyone mail your pre-launch freebie to their list? There is nothing in it for them and they're better off waiting until the day of the launch.

You can argue that the "sale" is made when they first sign up to your list, and is therefore made by the first person that introduces the customer to you.

#2 ensures that the affiliate who "closed the sale" gets the credit.

Number 2 definitely. Both have good and bad qualities, but for the most part I think 2 is more fair and easy to deal with.

No one wants to see a hardworked affiliate commission go away because someone else linked them to the site with their cookie first and the person didn't even look at it.

My vote for #2 as well. After all, it might just be the last affiliate who finally convinces the buyer to go ahead, so it's only fair to give him/her the cut.

I too would go with #2, but I would like to see them set for a lifetime UNLESS a new cookie is set in it's place.

There is no reason for cookies to expire in 30days like I see some programs do.
