I didn't know this about Hostgator

I've been doing some research, looking for other alternative vendors to my dedicated server that I currently lease through Hostgator. Ended up last evening doing an online chat with someone at ThePlanet dot com. In fact his name, displayed on the chat window was identical to a name I've seen while chatting with Hostgator support.

So I'm chatting with this guy, and I mentioned something about Hostgator. His immediate response was -"Oh yeah, they're our biggest customer".

My eyebrows hit the ceiling. I was always under the impression that Hostgator had their own hardware, but in reality they also are just a reseller.

Was anyone else aware of that?

I had no idea. Hmmm... I would be surprised myself. Why were you looking to move?

Yes, they use "The Planet's" datacenters and they have a fantastic backend. The support team is based in Huston and The Planet has datacenters all over the place. They took over EV1 Servers (Huston based company) about 1-2 years ago and I can certify the backend services and foundation of HostGator is sound as I have about 20 dedicated servers identicle to HostGators setup with The Planet.

    Hi Mary,

I haven't been completely satisfied with the configuration and management of my server. In retrospect, I haven't been completely aware of the line where Hostgator leaves off and my responsibilities for server management begin. I have since signed up with an individual who is very good at server management, and is curing a lot of my security and server management issues.

It was my understanding that Hostgator and Hostmonster were connected. Doesn't much matter to me as long as they are meeting my needs.

Very aware that this may change in the future as my needs change. Customer service and up-time high on my list.

hostgator offers resale packages as well, so you might find other hosting companies being built upon hostgator's system

Yeah I was surprised as well when I first found out as well. I figured they had their own data center!
