My favorite one so far is Google XML Sitemaps. My main blog site now gets insta-indexed when I add new content and I am pretty sure it is because I have been submitting proper sitemaps to google for the past 3 months using this tool.

Quick Adsense - Allows me to put any ads (not just adsense) just about anywhere in posts that I want, can rotate random ads, etc.

W3 Total Cache - I like this caching plugin to speed up page loads because it makes integrating with a CDN like Amazon's S3 + Cloud Front very easy.

If you keep your WordPress software, plugins and theme files up to date there is no reason why anyone should be able to get unauthorized access to your site. It's a good idea to change the default Administrator username to something other than "admin" to make your site less susceptible to brute force attacks.

To do this, first back up your database (just in case something goes wrong). Then create another user account on your site and give that username full administration rights. Then when you delete your "admin" user account you can assign all posts & comments to the new account.

A simple but useful plugin to prevent brute force attacks is called "User Locker" that lets you set a limit to how many times someone can try to login with the wrong password.

Another thing you can do to make sure others can't post to your site is to disable site membership sign ups. Go to Settings --> General Settings and look for the "Membership" check box next to "Anyone can register". Deselect it.

That will keep your site from getting tons of spammy user accounts added to it.

Oh, and go into your "Users" list and delete any bogus user accounts that might be there too while you're at it.

Generally speaking WordPress is a fairly secure platform. Pretty much all of the hacked sites that my company recovers for people ran into problems because they either didn't bother updating their WordPress version or they used passwords that were easily guessed. I can't think of a case in nearly 3 years that was caused by any other factor.

There were a couple issues in the last year with major hosts who didn't know server security and that allowed many updated sites to be hacked

One thing to keep in mind is not to go crazy with plugins because they will slow down your site.

Adsense Manager – This is my favorite advertising plugin. This plugin will place your ads randomly throughout your posts. Simply add your publisher ID and change the ad colors.

Advertising Manager – Here’s another great advertising plugin. With this plugin you can setup a wide selection of ads including random CPA offers. Once you’ve created an ad, view your widgets panel and drag the ad to your sidebar.

Easy Privacy Policy – This Privacy Policy is great to protect your site, looks professional, and it includes information that Adsense requires.

Global Translator – Your visitors can be from any country. I always include this plugin on my sidebar. You can translate your entire site into another language with this plugin.

Google XML Sitemaps – This plugin will help with Google indexing. It’s a map of your site. This plugin is a must.

Kontera ContentLink – Another great way to earn revenue is by turning random words throughout your articles into advertisements. This plugin does just that. Sign up with Kontera and enter your publisher ID in the Kontera settings.

      George,

I can't seem to get adsense manager to work...

I have inputted all of proper information into the webforms inside the wordpress admin panel "ads" area but the ads do not populate on my blogs.

I have installed it on three of my blogs, all different wordpress versions, and none of them show up?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

      Thanks

How did you come to the decision to make a Top 17 list? Did it start out as a Top 10 list and then there were just a few that you felt that you had to throw in there or are you starting a new trend? Should David Letterman make the change too?

    17 plug-ins!

How long does your blog take to load?

A lot of themes, (mainly premium ones) have the features in some of these plug-ins coded into them in a much more succinct manner, greatly reducing load time.

With some SEs now considering load time in their algorithms, seems to me the fewer the better. I, myself cringe anytime I use more than 5. Lol. (but do use up to 7 or 8 sometimes. Especially if the topic is near a bad neighborhood. )

Also, coding in a feature or two using the 'edit' screen can save using a whole plug-in that really only has one or two features you are/were wanting. (You can probably outsource that if coding PHP is uncomfortable to you, although with a few searches, almost any snippet of code can be found that you can use with little fear of 'breaking' the install.)

    Hi DogScout,

Not all the plugins load when your blog is loaded! In fact I haven't found any correlation between the number of plugins loaded for a Wordpress instace and the corresponding load time. I have ADSL though - it might be niticable to somebody on dial-up.

Any plugin developers out there that can comment on whether plugins will slow down the initial loading the blog?

    Cheers,

    Leigh.

I think I notice it. When I copy/paste the code the plug-in adds to the pages it adds it to in the editor, I see a faster load. Could be my head... still loads in 2-4 seconds or better, too fast for me to time.

It all depends what the plug-in does.
I seen an ecommerce plug-in last year run over a 128 queries with only a couple products and categories. I assume they had some queries and joins inside a loop, which is a nono.

On another note, the front end is an issue on a lot of plug-ins loading JavaScripts and multiple CSS files.

Say you have 4 different types of social plug-ins and each has 1 script and 1 CSS file. Since they are social, they are bound to have images also.

Now say your theme is not optimized the best (most are not!), and there are multiple scripts and CSS files along with usually un-optimized graphics.

Most of these theme makers have favorites, say 1 grid.css, 1 reset.css, your style.css and a couple js files, some have 4 or 5 for some reason or another. We didn't even count the graphics and post images yet we are at
      8 http requests for the 4 plug-ins
say 6 more for you theme CSS and js

and you are going to have somewhere around 16 - 24 images for the theme itself on a graphical theme + your plug-ins images.
So say 34 HTTP requests + your post images which can be large and any other plug-ins.

And this is still light weight compared to what I usually see, but it is enough on a shared host and slow connection to make it a lagger.

I took a snapshot yesterday of the load statistics for an IM / Sales Page theme for WordPress
This thing is a slug, and does not need to be.
127 requests, 2.3 megs and 31.29 seconds to load. (A sales page)

Note to mention the bandwidth for a month when traffic builds is going to be huge for that simple page.

Point is, be-careful, it all adds up and adds up fast, just to make something that could have been nice very slow.

Blah. Lame. Now I'm sitting here thinking of my personal site which I'm building and realizing I may fall into this "slow" category. Rats!

But Thank You! This is terrific info and something I'll not only bookmark, but remember. Optimized sites are critical to the user experience. I'll pretty much always leave a site after about 10 seconds of load time.

Well... back to the drawing board

The EzineArticles plugin makes it easy to send your posts to Ezine Articles. But always hit "validate" to get posts across and never "submit" because I always see formatting issues that can cause problems with article approval.

      For example:

I put a fair amount of links in my posts. Having been a blogger for several years I like to give my audience the opportunity to go to sites and pages that I refer to. Nearly all of those links have to be removed to comply with Ezine's editorial guidelines.

Post formatting can be a problem too. To make my posts more readable for my audience I add headers and images. These don't carry through to Ezine Articles well at all.

Headers get ignored completely and Ezine doesn't even see a paragraph break. So I end up adding the breaks and wrapping my headers in strong tag to help them stand out.

Basically, my opinion is if you only write on your site in the plain vanilla format that Ezine Articles requires you will have somewhat boring looking blog content and it will hurt your own traffic long term. And if you do write your contact to attract a bigger audience then your best bet to ensure article approval will be to manually edit your articles before you submit them rather than relying on the "submit" button in the Ezine plugin.

Love the list but I have a challenge for you.

Bring up a URL of a post on a site with the plugins.

Now bring up a post on a site with no plugins.

Is there a difference is load time? It is widely speculated that more plugins can slow down a site and a slow load time may harm rankings. Your site sounds like a perfect candidate to show fellow warriors what really happens (ie you are likely to have two blogs on the 1 hosting account to directly compare).

Anyone else interested in what happens in this case?

For those who are concerned with page load times (and it's a good thing to pay attention to) the issue is not "how many" plugins, but rather what those plugins do.

Some plugins don't slow down your site at all. Others add java script and css files which add to your http calls and can slow things down. And then there are the poorly written plugins that do far too many database calls - stay away from these.

This is another reason I like W3 Total Cache. This plugin can combine, cache and minify all of the java script and css files to significantly reduce the number of http calls and speed things up significantly.

I have sites with dozens of plugins running that server up pages nice and speedy. You just have to do a little extra work optimizing things when you do that is all. W3 Total Cache makes that easier.

Most site developers do not have a clue how many libraries they are loading, queries being executed, or actual bandwidth consumed per page load. Poorer designed plugins have the nasty habit of loading the JS/JQ libraries on the front page of a site--irrespective of where they will actually appear--and use no compression at all to do this.

In Google Chrome, there is a little tool when you right click called "Inspect Element". This will give you a tremendous amount of information. Debug is also your friend. One can install the FireFox addon FireBug and get to this same info. Learn these tools...

I pretty much gave up on WordPress. Nice platform--but I can get so much more out of Joomla! and its extensions. But, you better get to know it very well--it's not plug and play like WP!

Asking what's the best plugin is like asking a mechanic what's the best tool.

The one that does what you need done.

It all depends on what you need it to do. Sounds like you're talking about autoblogging?

Personally I'm not a fan of autobloging at all. It seems like a polite way of saying spamblogging. I have yet to see an autoblog that ads any value and is worth reading. The margins are so small that you'll be lucky to cover your hosting costs.

      That's my opinion any

wp super cache or w3total cache? I just switched to w3total cache and it looks like it has more bells and whistles, but which one is better for the purpose of caching? or are they equally good?

for the page links to plugin or quick page/post redirect it basically allows you to redirect any page you have to another post or page or even external URL... does anyone use this for link cloaking? What applications do you use this for other than fixing moved posts and pages?

Also, meant to mention wpSpolier which is great for a toggle hide/show button. I use this for podcast transcripts.

    Plug-ins I can't do without are -
    * Akismet- moderation of spam comments my blogs receive daily. Its so hard to do it manually. This works like a charm.
*All-in-one SEO- Good for starting up SEO in my new websites.
*Easy Policy- A really easy tool to use so I can make policy in my site right away (for adsense)
