The Amazon Screw Job?

On August 6th, I somehow sold a Kindle through one of my affiliate links. At the time, I had sold enough products to be at the 6.5% tier. Problem is the item was "out of stock" so it didn't ship immediately.

Well turns out the Kindle just got in stock and was shipped out on September 2. This means I only get 4% because I haven't reached the 6% tier for the month yet.

It's a $189 item so 2% would have been a little less than $4 but the point is this has the distinct feel of a screw job.

Someone ordered this thing approximately 26 days ago when I would have gotten a decent % commission but the order somehow wasn't shipped until my referral tier commission had started over.

At the very least, it's an inequitable way of doing business. I sold the item during a 6.5% commission tier so it should have been marked as such no matter when it was shipped.

On the other end, someone held this thing over for the next month - be it a 3rd party seller or Amazon.

This really pisses me off. The only reason I use AZ is to lower my Adsense CTR with some sort of a supplemental income, albeit an efficient one. Now, I'm thinking about dropping it altogether.

They don't pay me enough or have a long enough cookie for me to justify taking a direct slap to the face like this.

    Commission Junction my friend...

    You would get 8-12% on products such as these. Obviously not on the Kindle because it is an Amazon product, but on others of similar caliber

    I would think that Amazon's biggest concern is their customer. I wouldn't think they would hold off shipping a Kindle until the next month just so they can avoid paying four bucks to an affiliate. Is it worth $4 to upset a customer who paid $189 for an eBook reader? Also, I bet they'd rather have that Kindle in the customer's hands ASAP so they can be buying eBooks to fill it up.

      Good points.

      I'll offer that this may be done over the aggregate. 2% over several items for a 3rd party seller would add up (though you're right that it wouldn't make biz sense for AZ itself to do this). Also, even if the shipping was completely innocent, why not give your affiliate credit for the full tier sell given the months changed over between its ship date?

        you make money with amazon by volumn

        not just 1-2 items

        it's their policy commission paid when item shipped not ordered..

        take negative attitude, think about...

        how did I sold this kindle, what can I can do to sell more...

    I agree with Dan. Plus, the Kindle has historically run into supply problems due to the heavy demand.

    Actually, you only got 4% because the % on electronics IS only 4%

    When it shipped was a moot point....

    Try promoting non-electronics items

    Also, the idea with Amazon is that someone is rarely purchasing just a single item.

    I just started promoting Amazon.

    I have only had two sales.

    The first sale was my sister making a single $80+ software purchase. (Thanks, Alison! LOL)

    But...

    my second sale was someone who purchased $2700 worth of product.

    Am I now an Amazon convert? You bet!!!!

    Let me get this strait, there are marketers here making 10,000 times what you think you lost, and instead of asking them how to generate the next six sales, you are going to spend your time whining about $4.00?

    It is the hottest selling item on Amazon.com and they run out. Big deal!

    I would not have given it a thought, but had I, I would try to find out how to get the other six sales. Look in the WSOs, there is a man selling 20,000 visitors to your website for $16.00, I think 10,000 for $11. Do you think that out of that many people at least one or two might buy something?

    Measure your time here on this thread, and then put it against your productivity if you were driving traffic or building more websites. How do they compare? Which one will pay more?

    Besides, Amazon doesn't hold up deliveries for one month just to hope you won't make 7 sales this month.

    Be real! today is only the 3rd of September. Get moving and you'll get that $4.00 and then some.

      Just make more sales this month and it's all fine.

      Sometimes you get a big order on the last day of the month and it won't count until the next one.

      It's no big deal if you just keep selling items.
