How do you reduce a PDF file size?

Is there a way to do so? I just created a PDF report which is like only 20 plus pages but it's taking a long time to be downloaded. I suspect is because there are lots of images in it. What do you peeps suggest?

Most PDF applications (acrobat pro, preview on the mac) have reduce file size commands.

It's easy when you have the right apps

Reducing resolution on images... to a point until they start to look like crap (around 70-65%?). Remove most of the images.

I would need to know the type of images. Are they jpeg, giff, etc. Photoshop could be a big help here.

Different images types use different methods to reduce the file size. A GIF's file size is reduced by lowering the number of colors in the image. A JPG's file size is reduced by increasing the compression level.

Different image types are better suited to different file types, as well. For example, if an image has a lot of straight lines and large areas of continuous colors it will more than likely be a smaller file to save it as a GIF image, provided you can reduce the number of colors far enough. A JPG with a lot of continuous color starts to degrade quickly when compressed, so in order to save it at decent quality the compression must be minimal. An image with a lot of detail with varying colors and gradients, such as a photograph, will probably be smaller as a JPG.

Reducing the dimensions of any image will reduce the file size.

Also, limiting the number of fonts used in the PDF will help since every font you use has to be embedded in the document. If you use one font for headlines, another for the body text, and perhaps one for blockquotes or other notes that you want to add visual emphasis to that's not bad at all. I've seen some PDF's that 20 or more fonts, and that's not good.

If you are using adobe acrobat when you export, make sure it is set to interactive rather than print, this helps bring down the size however does bring down the quality.

It shouldn't be noticeable unless you are scaling it up to huge sizes which you probably aren't

You can save a little time by zipping it, but the image recommendations above will give you the greatest benefits.

If you use Gif images on your PDF, the size of your file will be decreased a lot.
    Second good choice is JPG.

If you have Word 07, you have a choice to use the 'web optimized' format when transforming to a pdf. This reduces the file size.
