Little Things Mean a Lot...

As I'm going through the forum today, I am munching on the leftovers of a very nice lunch I had on Friday. As I looked at the takeout container something caught my eye...

The waitress who boxed up the leftovers not only marked the container with what was in it, but also the date. No opening multiple containers in the fridge to find the right box, and no wondering later "how long has that been there?"...

Very nice, thoughtful touch, right?

To those of you who sell digital products, particularly download-able products, are there any nice little touches you can add for your customers?

Things like naming zip files, folders, and product files with meaningful names?

Maybe adding file sizes and estimated download times?

What else could you add to make your buyers' lives easier and their impression of you brighter?

Yep, it's cool when you find someone who actually cares!

When I create a product, I include instructions on how to consume the product so it doesn't just sit on my customers hard drive and rot.

Whenever I sell a website I include within the download files a screenshot of the theme's options page (I only ever use WordPress). It just takes a minute to do and it's of no consequence if it's never used by anyone, but it's useful to newcomers who find that hitting the 'Reset' button after making a couple of changes that they are dissatisfied with has everything reverting to the theme's default settings and not to the original settings of the site they bought (an understandable mistake, I think).

Additionally, it's helpful to me as a seller too because it cuts down the time that would otherwise be spent supporting confused users who have been experimenting and want to know how to get things back to the way they were before.

I like to ask everyone who opts into one of my lists if there's some little thing I can do for them, such as liking a Facebook page, following a twitter account, or posting a comment on a blog page.

  • John, you just made me laugh and gave me a good idea for when I have to travel... LOL Particularly with the food I prepare at home. I can date it on the container, that way my husband knows when to eat it!!!

AS for the services, well you see, I always like to read instructions. I am a writer and usually not very proficient with a lot of the software that my husband uses for his services. A 1, 2, 3 step is ALWAYS very much appreciated. Not to mention a zip name that ACTUALLY matches the name of the program. I am sure some of you have noticed on occasion that you buy something and after you download it you can not find it. It so happens it downloaded with a name that was totally irrelevant.

I certainly appreciate that sort of information. 'More communication' is a watchword for me lately.

I also enjoyed a comment of yours (back a ways) about user names that look like someone dropped a sandwich on a keyboard. At least for the first couple of days, then I realized you were talking about mine!

What niche are you in? I'll make a note to never venture there. But I do appreciate that kind of enthusiasm.

It's busy people who can say 'understandable mistake.' Do nothing perfectionists are really hard to deal with. It's nice that it has a side benefit for you too and makes everything go a bit better. (assuming)
