Procrastination by Activity

As we all know, I'm sure, 'procrastination is the thief of time.' So my question is: are you procrastinating right now, by making yourself busy? I would encourage you to think about this a little.

It goes without saying that human beings are amazing creatures. We are naturally creative and sometimes that creativity can even extend itself into self-deception.

So, I wonder how many people here think they are busy conducting their business in some way; and how many are just deceiving themselves into thinking so. Procrastination by deliberately becoming busy is something we all need to watch out for.

Personally, I am definitely procrastinating right now. I know exactly what I should be doing, but I am not actually doing it. Instead, I am here; reading a few posts, commenting here and there and, of course, writing this post too (lol).

Now, once I have had my Warrior fix for the day, I'll be off to do a bit more procrastinating by consuming copious amounts of coffee .... and then I'll finally be ready to get some work done

Exactly what I'm doing right now. You're right, it can be dangerous. You logically fool yourself that because you're doing something, that it's something worthwhile. I'm not saying that the WF isn't worthwhile, but I'm sure we all use it as a place to escape from our work sometimes

    Hi,

Not sure if you ever heard of the now defunked S University - online Personal Development crowd which were red hot a few years ago.

Anyway I still have an archive of online audio files plus CD's and the other day I was listening to one of those audio files and the gentlemen suggested not to focus on "actions" but instead to focus on 3-5 "outcomes" that you are wanting to achieve for the WEEK.

If we are focusing on the "outcomes" wont this make life so much easier?

        Hi Will,

No I don't have rights. The audio files are from Faculty Replays received by email from SU direct when it is going. I was a member.

Not sure how long the links will remain live. My CD collection was received by registered mail and of course mine to keep and absorb and share.

      Absolutely.

If you need to get X done by a certain date/time, set that down with MEASURABLE steps in the middle. Check those as you go - you'll have immediate feedback on your progress and it will help control the procrastination.

    Interesting topic.

I like to refer to it as "doing lots and lots of bugger all"

It's so easy to make yourself feel busy, while actually going round in circles - if you're not focused on your goals and taking steps towards your final destination - you're going nowhere.

    Great reminder Will.

Some people are procrastinators by habit -- that is, they habitually procrastinate by doing the same, repetitive things over and over again even though they are completely aware of the fact that the things they are doing are not moving them forward but are rather giving them an excuse to think they are 'busy' with tasks that have nothing to do with what they should be doing.

So instead of working on that "something" that needs to be done, they enter the habitual cycle of... say, checking email over and over again, spending time on social networks, shuffling things on their desk...

I know because I'm guilty of doing this at times... haha. =)

Funny thing is procrastinators know what needs to be done but they put it off over and over again, somehow finding a justification for not having to do that thing today.

Procrastination could be known as another name - "creative thinking" (haha). After all aren't all good ideas worth thinking about; and might it be possible that cruising through the WF is a good way of getting the creative juices flowing? That's how I justify it anyway

    I've been procrastinating all day.

    • 'I won't start that project just yet, I've got to get to the doctor's appointment.'

    • 'I won't start yet because it's almost time for lunch and I need a stretch of time free to tackle this.'

    After lunch: I fell asleep.

    • 'I won't start this project yet because I need to get a drink and take my pain meds. I can't think straight at the moment.'

I can guarantee that the next one will be:
    • 'It's not worth starting now, husband will be home soon and it'll be time for dinner.'

Yes, I get so much done every day it is astounding.

Interesting poll and interesting discussion! I like some of the descriptions (like doing lots and lots of bugger all) and some of the tips to avoid it (like focusing on outcomes not activity) but do you know what I really like?

That I am in very good company, with 76% (so far) of the poll procrastinating.

I used to work for 2 hours a day, and "do lots and lots of bugger all" for 6 hours a day. I have to cut down on the "doing bugger all" time quite considerably, although I typically refer to it as "doing research"!

      Cheers

    Will,

I think the procrastination sets in when you get stuck with a particular issue, and side track with projects that are easier to do.

This is what I've been doing over the past few months to get a project finished...

    1. Turn off all phones
    2. Don't answer the door
    3. Place a hammer through the TV
    4. Increase stubborness by 200%
    5. Only deviate from project for nourishment & exercise
    6. Get good sleep
    7. Smile and always agree with your partner / spouse

    8. Most importantly- Get serious about your business or project and get it finished, it's your life so don't waste it on never ending over complicated projects.

    9. And finally - The secret magic formula doesn't come in an email, it comes from you..

    I digress, back to work.

Well, honestly speaking I am also procrastinating right now. However, this is being done when we want ourself to believe that we are doing what we should be doing but its not true. In other words, we are lying to ourselves and expecting it to be a truth. How sick?

Put me in the 'yes' column.

I did indeed think about it, Will...

I find I use this forum to procrastinate in two situations.

    1. I've set myself a task, and now I'm having second thoughts about it. The time spent lets my subconscious stew over the dilemma and give me a solution.

    2. I've defined a problem and the desired outcome, and I'm again letting my subconscious help me fill in the blanks.

The type of reading and commenting that fits my 'procrastination' mode is mainly to keep my conscious mind occupied and out of the way. Kind of like parking the kids in front of the TV in the living room so Mom can make dinner...

When I look at a day and see nothing but 'six hours of bugger all' (love that expression), then I'm just stalling.

Same here. I need to keep my hands and eyes busy while my brain works.

You know, it occurs to me that I've got an awful lot of research and study invested in the subject of productivity, but I've never really collected it into one place. Seems like that should go on my "product ideas" list.

This thread is discouraging. Here I was, proud of the fact that I am a world-class procrastinator, with little to no competition, and now I see that I was in error, that there is, in fact, a lot of competition for the title.

I'm definitely, positively, going to change all that. Tomorrow.

You shouldn't ever feel the need to screw around and procrastinate. Pick something out. (Create a product, adsense sites, cpa, clickbank offers) whatever is your fancy..Design a plan...and knock it out the box...

Why would you procrastinate? Because you're not sure of the plan works...Only one way to find out. Do it...Get experience...Measure your results, adjust the plan, and knock it out..

Spend less time of the forum reading posts and more time focused on a task, and you'd get a lot more done..

LOL This reminds me of Sunday. I'm trying to prepare myself for getting back into self employment mode so I told myself that on Sunday I would make sure that I worked at least 8 hours on my websites. I got up at 8am, didn't even start working on my websites til around 1pm, and by the end of the day only got in about 3 hours of work. Epic fail.

Methods of procrastination: video games, tv, WF, checking my stats, reading up on new automation products.

I was also supposed to be in bed an hour ago. <_< I'm procrastinating on that too.
