any feedback on drag n drop websites?

I have recently been evaluating dragndropwebsites.com and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on it. $997 seems very steep but maybe I'm just naive. Seems like a quick way to get a website up and running.

Any input or recommendations for alternatives?
Thanks,
John

  • Wouldn't Weebly with a custom domain be a cheaper way to go?

    • Not familiar with weebly but I'll go do some research.
Any other good alternatives you can recommend?

      Thanks

I don't know .... I wouldn't buy it. It simply doesn't give very much information about the "product" or about the websites produced. Is this spun garbage sites that it produces. It almost sounds like a site cloaking program.

Also, they haven't even finished the website

  • Hi, I'm not a techie at all, not even a cell phone owner. I was able to do site with Wordpress.org free theme, paid for hosting at hostgator.
  • John,

Take a leaf out of Suzanne's book (post above)

    1. Purchase a domain name from GoDaddy $7.49 with coupon
    2. Hostgator hosting $4.95 / month for one site
    3. Install Wordpress or Joomla or any other of the free Fantastico software available free with Hostgator

You can have it all done in around 20 minutes for less than $20

Use a small amount of your money for promotion, and advertising.

    • Both Weebly and Tumblr are there too.

I use Weebly, a pro-account can host up to 10 different domains. The free account hosts 2, and has less functionality. For example, pro comes with password protection if you have a subscription site.
  • Weebly.com actually is a very good option but I am not sure how fast or well it gets picked up by the search engines (not that any good marketer here couldn't get results with any site regardless). It is very slick and easy to use though. Not a program but an online service. Free to use up to a point.

90 Sec is a very inexpensive, fairly easy to use option. Drag and drop simplicity with a host of great features. I use this program a lot.

Wordpress in conjunction with Artisteer is a fantastic option. Artisteer will create a website design for you in one button click if you want, and you can further fine tune your designs. They can look like blogs or just plain old websites. It will create themes for Worpress, Joomla, Drupal and a bunch of other formats including HTML. I use this a lot too.

Many people don't know that there are pretty much all the the tools you need to build a website right in the cpanel that most good web hosts offer (such as Hostgator or Bluehost). Most hosting packages include free website builders in the cpanel. I recall at least 3 options in Hostgator and a few in Bluehost. They usually include a sort of light weight CMS. There are also a few FTP upload programs included for further flexibility.

If you are willing to spend over $900 for software, then you should be more than willing to cough up around $400 and get ALL of the following:

90 Sec, Artisteer, a domain name and a Hostgator account.

Then you will have covered all your easy-to-use website building options.

If you prefer straight up HTML to build a site, Coffeecup software offers a very nice HTML builder for cheap and it has a ton of pre-done code snippets ready to go. They also have other software that extends your capabilities inexpensively, such as their web form builder. They have free trials for everything.

Kompozer is a pretty good program generally and it is FREE!

Lots of options out there for you that cost way less than dragndropwebsites.com, which looks a little dodgy - their sales site isn't even finished, which somehow strikes me as funny in an ironic sort of way.

  • Very helpful post kadoogan I'd never heard of Artisteer before and checked them out. Downloaded the free version to check it out. Many thanks!

    • Artisteer is a really nice little package that has improved over time to become my go-to program for Wordpress theme creation. You need to use a little ingenuity sometimes, and you will usually require some plugins to complete the sites you create with it, but in the end it works like a charm.

I have noticed that some theme packages offered by a few online marketers were created by it in the past.

I didn't mention that it is not as cheap as other options, but is still a lot less than $900.

You should get the Standard Edition if you want to have greater flexibility over the design of your sites, but some may be able to get away with the cheaper home and Academic version ($129.95 and $49.95 respectively). Because I design websites, the full version was a no brainer. Made that back with one website.

Overall it's nice to be able to create nice looking WP themes without having to dig into code to modify an existing theme.

Let us know your own thoughts on it after you have experimented a little, micksss.
  • I used to use a service called intuit (google it) for drag and drop websites and was very happy with it at like $10 a month including hosting.
  • Intuit is a company by homestead.com, I've only stopped using them as I mainly only build Squeeze pages now and optimize press does the job .
