How to Keep Costs Low for Domain and Hosting

Someone advised me to buy domain names on GoDaddy and the hosting on HostGator. Anyone agree? How can I keep costs low?

Personally, I'd run with NameCheap and HostGator.

If your sites will not be very resource intensive then you should be fine using an entry level hosting plan from hostgator or other inexpensive host. The domains will cost you more than hosting per month if you plan on doing one new review site per day. You can simply use your hosts addon domains if they allow that (hostgator does). If you don't want to keep buying new domains, consider using one generic authority domain (ex. topreviewsite.com) and create subdomains for each of your reviews (ex. ipads.topreviewsite.com, yourproduct.topreviewsite.com).

Hosting is not really going to be the part you should be concerned about, since most unlimited domain hosting accounts are fairly inexpensive. The domains are what you should be paying attention to, especially if you're on a budget. My best advice would be to scour the internet for special coupon deals on domains - godaddy and namecheap regularly have specials.

Unlimited Domain hosting is of necessity it sounds like. I use StableHost, which is $4. To top it off, if you google, there's a 50% off code for life! It's not the fastest host, but it has everything I need at a fairly decent speed for $2 a month. Who can complain about that?

And I'll second namecheap for your domains. There are some coupon codes online but don't expect much more than a dollar off or something along those lines.

Performance issues kill sales and optin conversions and reduce your SERPs.

No offense, but I would complain.

Google does take site speed into account when ranking a site. After all, it's about a "better user experience" and users don't like slower sites.

Get a reseller hosting plan so you can create a separate control panel for each site you create.

Does it have to be an entire review site, each with its own domain name?

Is it possible to create just a review "page", plus a few Squidoo lenses, Hubpages, blogs for each?

Or are you looking to flip the domains later?

My honest opinion is you'd be better of building 10-25 review sites, then spending the rest of your time and budget PROMOTING those sites to get traffic.

Sell off a few as you go along, and build a few more, using the profit generated from the sales instead of investing it all up front.

Having a lot of sites can be a real hassle and won't do you any good if you don't promote them. Even if you plan of flipping them, you'll do much better once they have traffic.

If you plan on making money, hosting and domains shouldn't even be an issue. You're looking at around $10/yr each for domains and (if you go with HostGator/unlimited domains) that's $8/mth for hosting.

If, after the first month you have 30 review sites with each on its own domain, each site needs to make $396/30=$13.20 per year. That's $1.10 per month per site. After two months it's $696/60=$11.60 per year or $0.97 per month for each site.

So I'd be just making sure I had a monetization plan that was likely to bring in at least a couple of bucks per month per site - then you'll always be in the black

I agree with Gary, if you're confident in your ability to make money off the sites you're going to make then you shouldn't really be too concerned with the initial cost.

If you're really scraping to save pennies I'd recommend shopping around for a few different companies that offer free hosting. Generally the accounts have small quotas so if you end up with a lot of traffic you may have to purchase a paid account. the advantage of these free accounts is not only that they are free, but if you can find a few providers you can split your sites IP addresses up, which can help with SEO.

One way to save money on domains, at least with GoDaddy, is to register in bulk. You start getting a discount when you buy 6 or more at one shot and I think the discount gets larger when you order more (not positive).

I agree fully with Kurt above, though. One a day ongoing won't do you much good if you're not also promoting those sites.

I think that you can find some amazing deals on ebay for domain names. They may not be custom chosen but still good domain names to build sites around. i would recomend .info domain names if you are doing review sites they will work well together. Godaddy has instant registration which means your domain names go live right away with no approvals no nothing a lot of cool features are also built in to godaddy's domain management panel. If you look around you will find coupon codes for .info's at .99 and you can also find 1st 3 months of web hosting for 1.99 per month. You can find other deals as well. Good Luck. I use GoDaddy for my domains and Hostgator to host them. I will say whatever you choose make sure it is reliable for one. That is the most important thing to me because you don't want to pay for something and then something happens and all your hard work go to waste. I like Hostgator because it is easy to use and they offer good and inexpensive plans. GoDaddy always have coupons online that give you a great deal if you purchasing a lot of domains and then transfer them to Hostgator. Hostgator has the unlimited domain package for $7.95 starting out and $10 afterwards, not bad if you ask me. I have ran into some errors with trying to install stuff on my websites and things went for the worse, but having Hostgator was a lifesaver because it showed me what I messed up on and it was easy to correct it. This is plus for Hostgator, they are reliable.

Dude, a hosting account with a domain is like $7 a month, and it's going to be the number one asset in your business. Do you REALLY want to be shaving a few pennies off a $7/month bill?

I will go with namecheap and Hostgator.

If anyone is interested in developing an online presence or business, a good domain and web hosting is an investment.

I wouldn't advice going for the cheapest deals. Downtime, and limited bandwidth could very much hinder the progress of your business.
