I was impressed when they added suggestions below the text box as I typed. This takes it up a (big) notch.

It was, and I couldn't remember what they called it. Now it shows search results as you type.

They're rolling it out, so it is coming to a data center near you soon!

I couldn't see it up until I followed your link.

          Holy crap!

Google is just a monster at changing the playing field..

It's interesting I'm ranking better for one of my keywords using the instant search instead of the original search..(And I'm logged out too...)

          Nice!

This part of it seems very skewed. I'm not sure what is going on here. I will see my page ranking much higher when I am logged in so I am led to believe it is considering my previous search patterns when returning results. That's scary! I don't think I want my search activity monitored that closely, nor do I want Google to decide what I should or should not see first in the search results.

            Anyone else experiencing this?

Hmmm, not sure if I like it. It starts to give you search results before it's even fully sure what you're searching. It reminds me of having conversations with those people who have to finish your sentence but... they never mastered the art of listening well so they always mis-finish them. Always found those conversations annoying.

Is anyone worried/considering/thinking about the implications on SEO and their marketing campaigns?

I'm not making blanket statements, as it is too soon to tell what is going to happen, but is there any concern that this could be damaging for long tail keywords? Search results show up before the term is entered, thus giving people what they want before they even type it in.

Even just the effect it has being a distraction to the user and all....?

Hmm... people are already blogging about it and some possible ramifications for long-tailed searches and SEO.

This could do a multiple things to affect people's seo campaigns. I'm not sure if for better or for worse though. This is crazy. Will they eventually make this the default do you think?

The other day when I was on Google my computer started doing this. I thought something was wrong with it so I restarted to see if it continued, which it did not. And I was glad. I think the feature is annoying as a searcher.

As for the SEO component. I suppose it could help with finding keywords on my side, but on as a user I may choose one of the suggestions given to me instead of what I was originally going to type, which could be bad for some previously used KWs. Just a thought.

          Here is an example.

When you type in the words "magnetic name" to search for magnetic name tags or magnetic name badges, the listings show up instantly now giving the user something to click on.

Magnetic name has 46 searches a month exact with very low competition.

The other terms (magnetic name badges or magnetic name tags) have more than 1000 exact. You can get listed number one for "magnetic name" and pick up all sorts of traffic as your listing will come up. Very few have optimized for such a word as before it was pointless as no one searched for it before.

Now you can essentially "snipe" all types of traffic with pointless 2 word phrases as your site can come up first now.
You've nailed it. Pre-keyword is going to be the new long tail (in terms of niche-like sites).

I think Instant is going to kill any traffic that the sites below the fold were getting before the changes.

After doing some testing, it seems to be very much biased towards authority sites if you stop halfway. Perhaps that will change after the pre-keyword optimised sites start appearing.

Until Google changes the game, again. This isn't going to stop.

Be sure and manage how much time you invest in sniping and algorithm exploits -- authority sites are a much better bet these days.

Does pre-keyword really work in the same way as long tail though?

I am just playing devils advocate...but if you are using white hat SEO and content to rank for the term ""Replacement Battery for laptop" then arent you usally going to be ranking as well for "replacement battery" as the term will be used just as often in your content and on-site SEO, backlinking etc.

If it doesnt work that way exactly...then isnt it a heck of a lot harder to rank for pre-keyword terms than long tail?

            Who knows really.....just saying lol.

This is definitely an interesting new feature.

While I can see how this might affect the search rate for longtail keywords. I think we'll be surprised of how many people will continue searching for the longtail keywords.

I've been playing around with it for a while now, and I noticed I keep typing until I hit enter. I don't stop 'cause I see an interesting page. And yet again, if you're a fast typer, it's going to be tough to spot most of the pages anyway.

But you never know. Testing this new feature will definitely be interesting...

Just pinged a good buddy of mine (engineer) over at Google HQ, and apparently they're rolling this out and gaining real time feedback/updates/data to test out a more widescale deployment.

My guess is that if this passes full muster, it'll go out to all datacenters

I still have no idea how this will fully impact things, as no one really does at this point...

However I dont see this as something that will change rankings for keywords. I see it instead as something that could very well drastically alter what exaclty people search for...

altering all kinds of results and stats on exact keyword searches and phrases.

    Here's how things will change:

Let's say you rank for "Replacement Battery for laptop."

With "instant" results, if the top result for "Replacement Battery" says something about laptops in their description, a portion of the searchers will never finish typing the phrase that would bring them to your page.

Of course, the broader site would have to have something specific in their description to pull in the searchers, but over time, that's probably what we'll see.

i'm ranking third in the US for my broad, most competitive keyword. It will be interesting to see how it effects my traffic for the keyword and how it effects traffic from all the long tail ones I rank for too.

As a searcher I like it.

As a marketer I wonder if searchers will be distracted/inticed away before they finish typing in my long tail keywords. It may mean we have to test now and see everything that "instantly" comes ahead of our keywords. If this way to search catches on it would not surprize me if there are some major flip flops in the global search stats on some related keywords.
